Nice little timing belt job for this ST!
Shame it’s the diesel version but looks nice nonetheless.

Not many pictures but this is the aftermath of a 12 hour shift…. (Two showers with swarfega later and I’m nearly clean!)

This job should NOT have taken that long but I was not told all the information by the customer. It’s not their fault but whoever worked on the car to put an entire engine in made a right mess.

So 3/4 hours in I’ve had to deal with numerous rounded bolts, different sized bolts and some stuff missing!

I’ll post another picture of the turbo tomorrow as it was completed blocked with carbon and completely siezed. Hence with the car was smoking and low on power.

New turbo, full service and coolant flush. Good as new and customer happy!

Not so many pictures of today’s job but something definitely different!

The customer is looking to buy a van to live in full time, they are currently residing in Spain! After being contacted and speaking to the customer I agreed to go and have a look at the van on their behalf.

Everything looked well except there was a rather large coolant leak which appeared to be coming from the water pump itself.

After letting the buyer know, they bought the van and I went to pick it up.

After a full service, water pump, fan belt and tensioner. The van is running bang on with no water leaks, ready to live in!!

Leaving the driver with no brake pedal whatsoever. New pipe flared, fitted and bled up.

Good as new!

Finishing the last bits for the Astra! Reason I would not do the service last time as the rocker cover gasket was leaking oil into the spark plug cylinders!

Turns out the heat cycles of the engine had turned the rubber gasket into plastic!

Also I am surprised they haven’t had anymore problems as the oil filter was that old it was sucking itself in! Here’s another picture of an “old” oil filter.

Always keep your vehicle serviced regularly!

Regular service turns into a bit more!

Vauxhall Astra in for a service and MOT advisories to be done. Customer complains of tyres wearing on the inside, possibly the tracking it out.

Went through the vehicle to find out there’s play in the lower arms, making the front wheels to have negative camber, resulting in the tyres to wear on the inner edges.
I also found a snapped coil spring, rear disc and pads severely corroded and the rocker cover gasket to be leaking oil into the spark plug cylinders…

All four tyres changed, rear disc and pads, rear shockers, NSF coil spring with top mount, both lower arms, tracking and finally a service.

Now everything has been done, the car drives smooth, straight and true. It also feels a hell of a lot firmer on the road!

I’m a simple man, I wake up, I go to work, I come home and I sleep.

But I want more… I want more sleep in less hours, I want more work than I can ever have in less hours, I love to come home to my darling Tina Derbyshire and the best part about my day is lying in bed next to her.

But there’s always that part of me that’s niggling to do something work wise, call it a curse of the grafter.

I want a brilliant future for not only myself, not only for Tina, but for us. I’m working so damn hard to make something come of my mechanics page so I can graft and DO something to help people and ourselves in the process.

An unwelcome surprise today! Customer complained of tyre pressure light on, possible puncture on passenger front and vibration at around 60mph…

Here’s what I found… dangerous defect to the vehicle and I’m quite sure there would’ve been a serious accident, especially if they were reaching 60mph! I wouldn’t even drive 30mph on this tyre…

New tyre fitted, vibration gone and a happy customer!

There’s something about this that’s not quite right… The customer only wanted an oil&filter change.

Just out of curiosity I checked the air filter as the fuel filter looked at least 5 years old (rusty metal around the top).

I advised the customer to definitely change the oil/air/fuel filter as it will be preventative maintenance to prevent and ensure any further damage or issues. They agreed!

THE PEUGEOT SAGA FINALLY ENDS! (Long Story!)

For those not in the know, customer came to me saying that the cam belt snapped on his car on the motorway.

The previous mechanic advised a complete new engine due to “saving money” on stripping it down to check if it had bent the valves.

Eight (YES EIGHT!) months later, the previous mechanic was still giving the customer the run around and endless possibilities. Directing the customer down the road of an auto electrician.

I finally get the call asking “can you fix it?”. With no history of any problems/what has happened over the engine swap, I give my word of “I’ll have a look and do my best. “

I came to the car, it was hunting; indicating an air leak. Smoked tested to prove. Before I could even do anything, the major coolant leak from the thermostat housing needed to be addressed first. Without coolant I couldn’t run the vehicle.

Inlet manifold leak meant new seals, after that it ran better but still had a misfire. Removed the manifold AGAIN to reveal a random metal bracket that shouldn’t even exist where it did.
Removed bracket, refit manifold and she now runs like a dream!

A car sat for nearly a year, a “mechanic” who couldn’t be arsed and a simple fix to get it back on the road.

Glad I could get the vehicle roadworthy for the customer. I also appreciate how calm and understanding they were. Also appreciate the trust in the process to be able to have the opportunity to fix the car.

Customer (taxi driver) complains of no clutch pedal, usual suspects are master cylinder but on further inspection after dismantling the clutch master cylinder I found the clutch pedal to be bent at the top.

I’ve had this before where I have changed the master cylinder and the customer came back the next day.

The clutch pedal unit had to be replaced and it was only then when I found it to be broken! (You can’t see break until you fully dismantle the pedal from the vehicle).

New clutch pedal and master cylinder, good as new!

Toyota Hilux I did today.

Radiator leaking and customer managed to temporarily repair it to get it to me.

No after pictures but left happy with a thought of no leaking coolant anymore.

Quick reminder to check your tyres no matter the tread. If they look smooth any point (inside or outside) the it may need tyres and tracking alignment as the wheels will run true and straight.

Dual mass flywheel failure resulting in complete replacement of flywheel, clutch and slave cylinder (off picture).

The days are now getting longer (thankfully!) and I am now able to offer after work mobile services.

Called out to a customer who complains that the handbrake won’t release. The fault lay with the handbrake actuator motor itself.

Cable cut so the customer could still drive the vehicle whilst waiting for parts, the downside of this was it then needed discs and pads. (Need them regardless due to overheating of the NSR handbrake being stuck on.)

Motor actuator, handbrake shoes, fitting kit, discs, pads and caliper all fitted. Works like new!
