Manchester School of Theatre - MA Performance
The MA/MFA in Performance at the Manchester School of Theatre, and part of the Department of Art and Performance in the famous Manchester School of Art.
The MA/MFA Performance creates a space for asking big daring questions about why we perform, who we perform for and how radical performance can act upon, and in, the world. It offers a distinctive opportunity for graduates and artists, from experimental theatre, contemporary dance, and performance art backgrounds, to create innovative new performance that plays across artistic borders. Huge congratulations to our wonderful MA and MFA graduates from the Class of 2023 who crossed the stage today, and thinking also of all our amazing graduates from this cohort who were unable to make it to the ceremony. We are all immensely proud of you and your achievements already, and you are all remarkable human beings. Keep the creativity alive!!! Here’s some of the team who had a hand in supporting you as artists and critical thinkers - just before the ceremony began…
"I had to throw it all up in the air... and not know what was gonna come down"
'My Inner Cowboy' was a performance by deconstructing his experience during a residencey at Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium in Denmark, as part of the Laboratory pathway; working with the group Cross Pollination. Nathan uncovered strong roots with his connection to character, leading his personal adventure in a light, humours and... musical way. Exploring storytelling and dramatherpy in a laboratory theatre environment.

Our MA/MFA students have been involved in a workshop today with PhD researcher, and graduate of our programme, Ben Knowles, who is undertaking practice-based research exploring autodidactic practice and the notion of failure in contemporary performance making and rehearsal processes. .h.d.k
At the end of each academic year we get our students to reflect, anonymously, on their experience on the MA/MFA Performance programme. These are a selection of quotes from previous years, as our current students begin their final Major Project module, culminating in another exciting display of new work at our Liminal Festival on 17-19 September this year.
There is still time to apply if you would also like to develop, refine, extend and challenge your own practice. Go to https://www.mmu.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/course/ma-mfa-performance to apply or go here https://www.theatre.mmu.ac.uk/ma-mfa-performance/ for more information.
A brilliant workshop today with Joshua Alabi of as part of the Major Project unit on the MA Performance programme. Great to have Joshua’s expertise around storytelling and theatre as the students go into making their final projects .artsmcr

Congratulations to our Contemporary Performance students on sharing the outcome of their two-week collaboration with this evening - wonderful work! And shout out to our colleagues at MMU who participated in the performance in different ways, including Louis Gilbert, who not only provided technical support for the show, but put in a brilliant performance too!
Our MA performance students would love for you to join them! If you’re up for it send us a DM or email!

MA/MFA Contemporary Performance
The MA/MFA Contemporary Performance creates a space for asking questions – big daring questions about why we perform, who we perform for and how contemporary performance can act upon, and in, the world. It offers a distinctive opportunity for graduates and artists, from experimental theatre, contemporary dance, and performance art backgrounds, to create innovative new performance that plays across artistic borders.
The course is shaped and driven by the passions and expertise of an interdisciplinary team of internationally recognised theatre makers, dance artists, performance artists and writers. Together we have designed a series of rich provocations (workshops, reading groups, lectures, practical intensives) that students can immerse themselves in, in order to challenge and refine their own practice.
For graduates this MA/MFA creates a bridge between undergraduate study and the professional arts world. For emerging and mid-career artists this programme is an opportunity for interrogating and transforming your existing work, within a supportive community of like-minded makers, with input from expert practitioners as mentors. We welcome applications from small groups of collaborating artists as well as individual makers.
