Contemplative stitching and mending this evening, talking about caring for ourselves as we care for our clothes.

Topics of conversation included craftivism, family, climate change, the Chorlton Arts Festival and becoming older. And there were mindful moments.

We currently have a counsellor in training with us, which means we can offer low cost counselling to adults in the local community.

So if you would benefit from a therapeutic conversation but can’t find the usual therapy budget or you’re not sure when you’ll get to the tip of the NHS waiting list, we can help.

Just give us a call or drop us an email.

It has been a pleasure to support the work of Hanna, our Ukrainian colleague, with Ukrainian refugees in the local area. Here is a snapshot of some of the work (and play!) we have been able to facilitate through Altogether Human CIC as a result of some generous funding from the Red Cross via the UKCF, Forever Manchester.

We have been in awe of the group's ability to come together and support each other, and to embrace life whilst overcoming the impact of the conflict, and resulting family separation and significant loss.

We love this quote from poet Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi. What an inspiring way to think about overcoming conflict, or having a non-violent approach to communication.

We have been thinking a lot recently about the kind of mindset or ways of thinking that allow us not to escalate conflict, and to have healthy ways of exploring and expressing our differences.

Rather than taking the position of right or wrong, or trying to come to an agreement on something, you can aim for understanding instead.

Alternatively, ditch talking for a bit and work out wordless ways of being with people or receiving comfort.... or maybe lying in a field watching the clouds pass, practising some mindfulness skills while you're there?

Thanks, Rumi. Good plan :)

Today was another group session in our Tree of Life group with refugees and asylum seekers. Today we focused on the leaves (important people in our lives) and the fruit (the gifts of life). And to celebrate these aspects of life we played on musical instruments made from “fruit” and tasted mangoes and guava whilst talking about other gifts of life.

What a great morning!

A bit of creativity goes a long way… this got us thinking of parent-child relationships. Did you know that monkey dads do a lot of the carrying?

Thinking back to this today and wondering whether a space for us to create our own “theme tunes” would be good.

Have you ever chosen a good theme tune for yourself or part of yourself that needed a boost? I’m often singing “You do it to yourself, you do…” about my own internal process.

Anyone else?!

What a great week, learning more about the Tree of Life model and narrative therapy. We have learned how to use metaphor and special lines of enquiry to tell stories in ways that make us stronger. The tree is a great metaphor. What does this one say to you about strength and resilience?
