There are about 600 muscles in the human body. Muscles have a range of functions from pumping blood and supporting movement to lifting heavy weights or giving birth. Muscles work by either contracting or relaxing to cause movement. This movement may be voluntary (meaning the movement is made consciously) or done without our conscious awareness (involuntary).

Glucose from carbohydrates in our diet fuels our muscles. To work properly, muscle tissue also needs particular minerals, electrolytes and other dietary substances such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium.

A range of problems can affect muscles โ€“ these are collectively known as myopathy. Muscle disorders may cause weakness, pain or even paralysis.

Different types of muscle

The three main types of muscle include:

Skeletal muscle โ€“ the specialised tissue that is attached to bones and allows movement. Together, skeletal muscles and bones are called the musculoskeletal system (also known as the locomotor system). Generally speaking, skeletal muscle is grouped into opposing pairs such as the biceps and triceps on the front and back of the upper arm. Skeletal muscles are under our conscious control, which is why they are also known as voluntary muscles. Another term is striated muscles, since the tissue looks striped when viewed under a microscope.
Smooth muscle โ€“ located in various internal structures including the digestive tract, uterus and blood vessels such as arteries. Smooth muscle is arranged in layered sheets that contract in waves along the length of the structure. Another common term is involuntary muscle, since the motion of smooth muscle happens without our conscious awareness.
Cardiac muscle โ€“ the muscle specific to the heart. The heart contracts and relaxes without our conscious awareness.

**What is insulin resistance?**

Insulin resistance is not classified as a disease in our country, but it does pose a problem.

It occurs when our body's cells become resistant to insulin. Insulin acts like a doorman to our cells, knocking on their doors, asking them to take in the glucose circulating in the blood. When the cells are resistant (full of glucose), they say they won't open because they have no more room for the glucose. Insulin keeps knocking, but the cells don't open, so the pancreas produces more and more insulin. Eventually, there are three "doormen" at the doors of your cells, knocking and trying to squeeze in any remaining glucose circulating in the blood. Glucose that doesn't get into the cells circulates in the blood along with insulin.

The body treats high blood glucose levels as a toxin, expelling it through urine or storing it in fat tissue, damaging various organs, including veins and arteries (which should be as smooth as highways). This can lead to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques, increased blood pressure, and potentially cause atherosclerosis. Glucose also binds to various proteins in our body, causing different ailments and inflammatory conditions. Similarly, high insulin levels can cause various ailments.

This creates a vicious cycle: the pancreas starts producing more and more insulin, and over time, the pancreatic cells become damaged. The next problem could be type II diabetes. Insulin resistance is a warning sign.

How to fight it?
The most effective way is through diet, specifically a low-carbohydrate diet like KETO.

Barbell vs Dumbbells vs Machines for Muscle Building

All three of these options can be effective for building muscle, but there are some differences to consider:

By doing push movements on one day and pull movements on another, you ensure you're using different muscle groups, which allows the other muscles to properly recover.
