Sheila Fell was born in Aspatria, Cumberland, and studied at Carlisle School of Art, 1947–9, and *St Martin's School of Art, London, 1949–51. Although she lived in London for most of her later life (she taught at Chelsea School of Art from 1958), she often visited her family in Cumberland, and in 1977 she wrote: ‘My main concern is landscape (although I have painted several portraits) and I have mostly drawn and painted in Cumbria, Yorkshire and Wales. The chief influence has therefore been that of the country and the different activities which take place on the land, the presence of the mountains, moors, sea, and the effect of the changing light in relation to the earth.’
Her early death was caused by an accident when she fell down a steep staircase.

We don’t know what these “handbags” are supposed to represent, but they were important enough to be carved into stone by ancient civilizations all around the world.
Emily Brontë was born in 1818 and grew up in Yorkshire with a very literary family. Both her parents wrote, and her Reverend father had works published. Alongside her siblings, Emily had a good education and had written poetry since childhood. In 1846, all three daughters published a volume of verse under male pseudonyms – Emily went for ‘Ellis’, while Charlotte was ‘Currer’ and Anne ‘Acton Bell’.
Her only novel was Wuthering Heights, published in 1847. It is a gothic love story set in the Yorkshire Moors, near where the Brontës lived. Its depiction of physical and mental cruelty challenges Victorian moral values, shocking its early reviewers. Wuthering Heights was not acclaimed as one of the masterpieces of the period until after her death. It has since become a classic in English literature, attracting a cult-like devotion and inspiring Kate Bush’s 1978 song.
Painted by her brother, this portrait was originally part of a larger group portrait, like the other works in our Collection. Emily's portrait here was cut out because it was judged to be the best of the bunch.
You can see both portraits on display in Room 21 on Floor 2.
