Here is what that ‘bean’ is doing to your boy!!

A few weeks back I came to treat a sweet little chap who had started bucking and not being very forward or happy while being ridden. Naturally his owner got everything checked including the final part of the process of elimination his sheath!

Well as you can see from the pictures we can see what is most likely causing this gorgeous boy to be uncomfortable. These beans don’t form over night they form over time horses will naturally keep going before they can start to show signs they are due a clean and health check. Great that his owners acted quickly as signs started to show to make sure he is feeling good again!!

To then receive a lovely message from his owner that evening the difference by having his bean removed was amazing 🤩

Totally makes my day treating your gorgeous boys and girls to make them feel more comfortable and healthy 😀😀

One of my lovely clients and her gorgeous boy strutting their stuff round Royal Windsor the other weekend, looking absolutely fantastic and to finish in amazing 8th place! I think it was his annual clean and health check he had on the Tuesday prior that did it 🤣🤣 Linda works extremely hard and deserves all the recognition she gets!! Well done 👏

Evening all 👋 apologies to anyone who has messaged and I haven’t got back to yet! Unfortunately I have been taken down with this horridvirus/tonsillitis completely wiped me out! Thank you to everyone for being so understanding where I have to reschedule appointments!! The one thing that sucks about being on your own self employed is when illness strikes!! However I’m a tough cookie and will soon be back on my feet! I just wanted to pop this message out there as I pride myself on getting back to people as soon as I can and absolutely hate letting people down last minute but sometimes life throws these curveballs!! Thanks again 🙏

Hi All 👋 hope you had a lovely weekend!

I often get asked the following questions, what is a bean??? Where is a bean located?? These are perfectly normal great questions!

A bean is a build up of urine, skin cells and sm**ma which forms inside a pocket called the urethra fossa which is located above the urethra at the tip of the p***s. As this little cocktail of things are unable to come out of this pocket the urine then calcifies to form beans, which over time these little monsters just keep growing!!

From a health point of view they can put pressure on the urethra itself making it uncomfortable for the horse during urination.

From a performance point of view due to location of the beans they sit quite high up so when the horse is working those inside hind muscles put pressure on the bean, again making it uncomfortable for the horse when they’re are working away. They say this is a similar feeling to us running around with a big stone in our shoe!! Ouch!!

But what about horses in the wild….
As these horses are entire they are covering mares and therefore this build up doesn’t form as they are cleaning themselves naturally! As our domestic horses are gelded we then have to help remove this build up! However it is only recommended that a clean is done every 6 months to a year using water based lubricants so we don’t disturb their natural flora!

Hope that helps! In the meantime here is a great video of Harry who decided to have it all out on show during his clean including his bean removal! Good job to his awesome mummy getting it all on video to be shared on here!!

Happy Monday 😀🐴

The lovely Mo!!

I have been attending Mo and his yard for quite some time now, however on Mo’s last clean this unexpected mass was felt on his shaft, this mass was not present at his previous yearly clean! The next steps was for Mo’s vet to assess this mass further.

Luckily as this had been detected early and due to the owners quick actions of getting the vet out the mass was found to be precancerous cells which meant it was able to be removed by laser. However had this been left unidentified the outcome could have been a lot worse for poor Mo including part amputation of his p***s.
Mo is still undergoing his treatment for this mass removal at the moment but here are a few pictures of the mass pre and post laser removal. Will keep you updated on Mo’s recovery story in time!

Just shows the importance of hygienists, we are much more than a quick wash around, or if people doubt whether this should even be done, it is an absolute must!! Just 6 months or once a year is all it needs, but great to get your horse health checked, the clean in my eyes is the bonus! 😀🐴

Hello 👋

I just wanted to do a little post to introduce myself to all you lovely new followers 😀

I am Gemma Nicholls of The GG Sheath cleaner/hygienist!
Being born into horses it’s the only lifestyle I have ever known and love, now with my two gorgeous girls, Eleanor and Georgie taking up the reins too!
When I get the time I love taking our boys Tommy and Paddy out, showjumping and team chasing is what we love to do!!

I had the pleasure of working for Baskerville Horgan and partners equine practice for 9 years where I received all my training, including my diploma in equine nursing. Deciding to start a family practice life had to end. While the girls were young sheath cleaning along with freelance work became the next chapter. I have been sheath cleaning for around 10 years now, however in the last few years it has become my main role 6 days a week 12months of the year and I absolutely love it!

Look forward to seeing all you lovely clients old and new soon, it’s always a pleasure cleaning your gorgeous horses! 🐴🥰

Thanks Gem xx
