It's World Teacher Day!

When it comes to our teachers, there's so much to be grateful for. Teachers form young minds, not just by educating them about their usual subjects, but by showing them how to interact and communicate with people and the world around them.

Thank you to all the wonderful teachers out there who are making a difference!

Feelings are complicated and often difficult to express, and when we struggle to find the words it can often become frustrating.

This is especially upsetting for children who struggle to communicate what they feel. However, writing can help children better understand themselves and work through their emotions in a way that encourages emotional maturity and a higher level of mental wellbeing.

In respect of the Queen's funeral yesterday, we did not post out on our accounts, today we still want to draw attention to yesterday's Youth Mental Health Day.

One of our biggest priorities as a literacy charity is educating people about the positive effect writing can have on a child's mental wellbeing.

Youth Mental Health Day encourages the discussion and understanding of mental health issues and this year's theme is 'Connect Meaningfully', which focuses on the importance of building and maintaining positive relationships.

Interestingly, children who used digital devices 1 to 3 times a month experienced greater development in emergent literacy, compared to those who had never used them.*

There's so much to learn and understand, both about ourselves and the world around us. Writing can help children understand their own feelings and make sense of complex topics.

Today we're celebrating International Youth Day!

Ageism can affect people from all walks of life, which is why this year's theme is intergenerational solidarity - creating a world for ALL ages.

Young people report age-related barriers in many areas of their lives such as employment, political participation, health and justice. This can have a wider effect on society, widening generational gaps and disconnection.

Through this celebration we raise awareness about the ongoing threat of ageism and the message that we should leave no one behind.

And a third of businesses are not satisfied with young people's literacy skills when they enter the work force.

As a literacy based charity, this is a very special day for us! We know that
children who enjoy writing have better mental wellbeing and that writing helps children work through their thoughts and feelings. Today, alongside First Story we're celebrating the joy of writing and spreading the word about its many benefits.

If you want to get involved... just write! In school, at home or even in work! It doesn't matter what you write about, so long as it comes from the heart.

In the UK, 1 in 5 girls aged 8 to 14 are considered ‘struggling readers'.

While they are enjoying the same number of books as other girls, they are spending much less time reading.

This is likely due to a lack of confidence and/or engagement, which is why it's so important to teach children literacy skills in a way that is fun and individually focused.
