Is it worth getting income protection?
Income protection insurance pays a regular monthly amount if you can’t work because you’re unwell, or suffer an injury that results in a loss of earnings. Knowing that, if you suddenly couldn’t work, the mortgage and bills would still be paid, can take a real weight off your shoulders, and mean you don’t need to put your future plans on hold.
Many of the workforce would receive some sick pay benefit from their employer. But for the UK’s self employed workers protecting their family, home and lifestyle if they can’t work could mean dipping into their long-term savings to keep afloat. An income protection plan isn’t just a safety net for the immediate expenses, it also protects your savings and investments.
Taking out income protection insurance might mean you don’t need to put money aside in an emergency cash fund as well – so you could choose to invest that money instead in your pension, or into a Junior ISA for the children.

The Good Business Charter exists for all UK companies, charities and public sector organisations across all industries and sectors and offers a straightforward accreditation, recognising organisations that prioritise and value their employees, customers, suppliers and the environment, whilst also paying their taxes according to the spirit of the law.
We joined back in 2021 as we're passionate about the GBC principles and wanted to help spread the word!

Business Owners
UK auto-enrolment rules require companies to provide a workplace pension for eligible staff and pay into it. This shouldn’t be a box-ticking exercise. With 69% of SMEs saying recruiting and developing skilled staff is their biggest barrier to growth1, companies could look to optimise their pension schemes – by reviewing features and communicating benefits – to help attract and retain talent.
Penny is settling very nicely into the new office space!....
Business owners often assume that their business will make enough money for a comfortable retirement – but what if things don't go to plan? If you are relying entirely on your company and it fails or doesn't perform as well as you'd hoped, you could be left with very little in later life.
A pension is a useful way to spread your risk away from your business and is an extremely tax-efficient method of extracting capital from it. That's because of the very generous tax relief that companies enjoy on pension contributions.
Tax-efficient extraction
Pensions are not the only way to draw money from your company tax efficiently. It is important to ensure your remuneration structure is tax efficient as this will impact the net income received from your business. Consideration should be given to all of the available allowances and exemptions, such as the personal allowance and dividend allowance.

The main rate of Employee National Insurance contributions will be reduced by a further 2% in the 2024/25 tax year, in addition to the 2% reduction we saw in January.
The economic outlook is brighter, but it’s still vital to ensure you’re using all the allowances and exemptions you’re entitled to.
Check to see if any recent changes to National Insurance, ISAs, or Capital Gains Tax will affect you.
In a welcome move in his Spring budget, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt cut employee National Insurance Contributions for the second time this year. But with tax thresholds frozen, many people find themselves slipping into a higher tax band – and paying more tax.
With a General Election looking increasingly likely for November, economic performance and the continued cost of living squeeze are likely to be high on the agenda.
All of which means that using all available tax breaks while you have them will help your short and long-term financial security and wellbeing.
What’s changed about Income Tax and National Insurance?
The personal allowance – the amount of income you don’t have to pay tax on – remains at £12,570. The basic rate is still 20%, and the higher-rate threshold, at which you start paying 40%, is £50,270. The additional-rate tax threshold, at which you pay 45%, remains at £125,140. These will be frozen until 2028.
The rates of income tax for Scottish taxpayers are different.
The welcome news for those working is that the main rate of Employee National Insurance contributions (NICs) was reduced by a further 2% in the Spring budget – a ‘permanent change’ according to Jeremy Hunt. Most employees will now pay Class 1 National Insurance at 8% and self-employed earners will pay class 4 contributions of 6%.
Class 2 NICs have been abolished.
What’s changed about Dividend and savings income?
Through the Personal Savings Allowance, basic-rate taxpayers can continue to earn £1,000 interest on savings before paying tax in 2024/25. For higher-rate taxpayers, the allowance remains at £500, and for additional-rate taxpayers, it’s zero.
But there are significant changes to Dividend Tax. The dividend allowance drops by 50% to £500 for the 2024/25 tax year. If you own shares in a company, or receive dividends from funds or investment trusts, this is likely to affect you.
Tax rates on dividends above the allowance 2024/25.

Getting on top of Capital Gains Tax
If you sell or dispose of an asset that’s gone up in value, you may pay Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on the profit, or gain.
Up until the end of the 2023/24 tax year, the first £6,000 of your capital gain is tax-free, but you may pay CGT above that threshold.
The CGT exemption is reducing significantly again for the 2024/25 tax year to just £3,000. So it’s worth knowing that, as well as making the most of your tax-free allowance of £6,000 you can also bring your CGT bill down in other ways – such as gifting assets to your partner or increasing your pension contributions.

A balanced portfolio of investments can help you meet the challenges of fluctuating inflation and interest rates and make the most of your savings.
A higher than average inflation rate means that, over time, the purchasing power of your savings may be reduced.
Building a diversified investment portfolio can help protect your money against inflation.
Over time, equity investments such as stocks and shares tend to provide greater returns than the average rate of inflation, although this may not always be the case.
Interest rates and inflation rates can fluctuate dramatically, as we have seen in the past two years. And that can have a very real effect on the spending power of your savings and investments, as well as your day-to-day household expenditure.
Rising inflation means most things cost more. And the knock-on effect of that is that any savings you have won’t buy as much in the future, unless the interest that you are earning on them outstrips the rate of inflation.
Visit our website today and read the full article on Investing to beat inflation for the long term, under the News tab.
