SOCCER STARLETS

40 years ago, Bobby Charlton's Rising Stars Introduced & held a National Skills Competition in many Town's & Cities for Grassroots Football UK Junior footballers between 11 & 16 year old. (A certain David Beckham won this Competition years later)

There were 5 skillsets which each category accumulated points & after all the events were completed a final total per player was calculated.

The top 6 players from each Town / City qualified to the next stage of the competition & went onto Manchester for the Finals & met the legend himself.

The top 20 of those did kick ups at half time at Old Trafford with 1st prize winning a brand new car, not a Ferrari but a LADA 😂

Myself and closest mate Gary Adley were very fortunate to do well in the Halifax comp and met the great man at the Nationals. Sadly neither of us got into the top 20 but the experience was one we'd both never forget. (Of the six from Halifax, two Boothtown lads made it professionally 👏⚽
(The other 4 liked a beer or 2 🍻😂)

We introduced this to our SOCCER STARLETS on Thursday night & the feedback from the players & coaches was great. The players were super focused trying their best in each event & were each given a monthly scoresheet which is logged & will to try & beat next month.

We hope this will encourage the Girls to practice a bit more in their own time on kick-ups, accurate passing-shooting & dribbling.

Ella & Lucy were finally awarded their medals from being Starlets of the week recently.

Excellent effort this week from our SOCCER STARLETS who did a trial run on a couple of individual skill tests (accurate passing & shooting) which in the months ahead we'll monitor we'll monitor their progress to keep them focused & motivated.

Our Starlets of the week from both classes went to Emma, Della, Niamh & Lucy 🥇🥇🥇🥇 who excelled also in the matches

SOCCER STARLETS have now raised the intensity bar as Grassroots pre-season is in full swing & its only 6 weeks away for the start of their league matches.

Our big games focused on switching play as quick as possible so they could create possible 1 v 1 or 2 v 2 opportunities if one of their team mates were stood in space & cleverly calling for the ball.

Currently they are all doing really well & by September we expect them to be really flying 💪

Prior to that the attention was dribbling at pace & then quick / accurate, pass & moving to their playing partner.

Our Starlets of the week in the 1st class was Holly 🏆brilliantly chosen by fellow Starlet Ava who made her night & our 2nd class had two standouts with myself choosing Ella who has come on massively in the last 3 months🏆 then Danny Shiels nominating CC🏆 which saw her again collecting more recognition after last week collecting the Player of the month for June. Well done girls 👏👏

Last weeks Thursday's classes had their first taster by moving the ball into wide areas of the pitch using neutral team mates for overloads.

They Girls will keep on doing this until it becomes 2nd nature as it will help them loads in their competitive matches.

"Our rebound volley net" made a guest appearance & after a few rounds each, their timing improved great...

Jorgie hit the strike of the season so far, riffled a 25 yard bullet which cannoned of the underside off the bar😍

Our first ever "Soccer Starlets of the Month" went to both Sophie 🏆+ CC 🏆awarded for their focus & engagement for throughout June 👏👏👏
(Always a tough choice these days, as everyone's doing so well 🔥)

Our "Starlets of the week" were firstly Ivy "chosen by Ava" who demanded to nominate her + was a deserved choice !

Amelia for our older group class & must say she's improving so much in game play & her communication was outstanding 💪💪

Our SOCCER STARLETS Girls were in high spirits on Thursday night after 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 semi final win the night before & carried on their positive energy into our 2 x age group classes.

Everyone worked on quick burst of speeds into various zones along with shooting practice & customary mini matches.

Ava was awarded this weeks Starlet of the Week for impressing us all & Emily was given the pleasure of presenting her medal 🥇

Our 2nd class of 9-14 year old's had both Dara & Ella 🥇🥇as our two standouts & its great to see collectively all the girls confidence & personalities shining through week on week.

SOCCER STARLETS 5-8 year old's focused for the 1st time playing a full game all evening. We let them play as much as possible to keep it flowing but jumped in here & there when needed for finding space, passing & corner kick tips where to stand / place the ball & run to take it from correct angles.

2 girls stood out on the night being Emilia🥇& newcomer Sia 🥇who has settled in brilliantly with the group.

Our 2nd class (9-14's) were split into two groups & with pre season having recently started, we've upped the anti of intensity & focus to prep them for their Grassroots team / Clubs best we can.

One group played half a game between them with the 2nd group competing against each other dribbling & passing at pace.

The forthcoming months will be more of the same to help them prepare well & get their fitness increased on the way.

Our standouts were both Lara 🥇& Matilda🥇who shone on the night & was great at our post training feedback they gave me 16 examples of areas they are needed to try improve themselves.

Well done girls, super proud of your effort this week...keep it up💪

The rain + other commitments beat most of us sadly today for our FREE SUMMER SPORTS CLASS but thankfully both Lily +;Faye were available to attend.

With the help of coaches Danny Shiels & Ewan we absolutely loved it, as it was treated like a one to one training session, that included kicks ups which Ive always found important / valuable.

At some point in the future SOCCER STARLETS will start providing one to ones sessions as was rewarding seeing in a short space of time how much information they took on board & improved their self confidence.

Very well done, hope to see you all on Thursday & as ever, all abilities are very welcome for extra grassroots training / learning so give me a shout below if we are for you 👍

This week our 1st class of SOCCER STARLETS worked on passing + moving forward in pairs, dribbling at speed & for the first time what a volley is via our new "volley rebounder"
Long way to go to grasp this, but in time they'll soon nail it along with us coaches teeing the ball up for em correctly 😂

Sophie was nominated by coach Ewan for as the evenings standout performer.

Our older group continued to learn whilst playing in a big game for the whole session. Good for the girls to try to anticipate where to stop the danger whilst defending & when attacking, try to be instinctive where the ball may land in the penalty area once crossed to give them the best chance of scoring / creating a goal.

Standouts were Lily + Lucy who in different roles were outstanding.

Your 🏅🏅🏅will be handed out next Thursday.

Today some of our Girls will attend our FREE SPORTS SESSION starting from 10.30am - 12pm on the Glen.

New faces Are very welcome too where they will be playing both Rounders + football.⚾⚽

Big thanks to Neil & Lewis at Macron Sports Hub Wakefield who continue to support us, with now bespoke medals along with long standing trophies to help reward our SOCCER STARLETS Girls.

Thursday our first class of 5-8 year old's continued to progress on passing & dribbling & the following lesson our 9-14's had an individual game in their relevant age groups along with one on 1 shooting combined with a mix of shooting tasks.

Poppy, Ella & Jorgie received their promised awards for our superb standouts in the last few months along with Lucy who caught the eye of her coaches for her passing & non stop effort in her game as this weeks Starlet of the week.

Our younger group also received recognition as for the last 3 weeks they have tried very hard & improved so much.

Well done everyone & yesterday in your respective galas & thankfully the prayers in the photos to do well in them worked 😆🏆

Varied passing was the focus for SOCCER STARLETS 5-8 year olds & then calling for the ball once in space. For the last part of the session it was very evident how much the information we passed on sank in.

(Simple really no calling = you wont receive a pass back !)

Mini 2v2 game at the end witnessed what we did in the exercise previous which was ace for me & coach Ewan to see.

Our last class for the evening saw our 9-14 year old's prepare for their upcoming Morley Glen Juniors girls gala. We had them playing in their named teams to keep it relevant.

Some very good interchanging passing & if you play like that today I'm sure you'll do yourselves & coaches very proud.

Got a tad lucky with the weather this week as the rain held off.

Our early Thursday 6-7pm Girls class worked on accurate passing in pairs, followed by penalties then finished off with a game.

Coach Ewan who's currently working towards completing his Silver The Duke of Edinburgh's Award called me across & said he never thought the girls would have progressed as quick as they have starting from scratch back in Winter....credit to you Ewan this is down to you also mate as your a natural with them👏👏👏

Our majority of our second group with both be playing at Elland Road on Leeds Utd hollow turf on Saturday evening so they wanted to concentrate on playing a big game to prepare best they can, along with a few playing a gala too.

Win Lose or Draw it will be a fantastic experience for them all & a memory they will never forever cherish !

Lastly the very best of luck to Leeds United & watching fans for tomorrow's BIGGEST GAME OF THE SEASON 🤞💛💙🤍⚽

Our newest crop of SOCCER STARLETS had their first ever activity day together yesterday at Jump Inc Leeds

Great to see them all bonding with their new pals + having fun.

Was definitely a work out for a the full hour in warm conditions lol

Our host was excellent too, very attentive + helpful.

Last night SOCCER STARLETS hosted training sessions for 5-8 year old's & 9-14 year old's GIRLS.

Our Younger Starlets firstly kicked off the evening, progressing from last weeks shooting class, by dribbling at pace & then hit the target. They also worked on using their weaker foot as my pet hate is only having ONE decent foot to play with at any level of football !!

After this our older Group insisted on playing ONE BIG GAME all evening, so we kindly obliged. Nice to see them using the width of the pitch & moving themselves into space after playing a pass...some top goals too BTW 👏👏👏

Last night saw couple of nice suprises

Our young coach Alfie had a little thankyou 🎁 for completing his The Duke of Edinburgh's Award with us & cant thank him enough for his 16 weeks helping me. His lucky NO7 Leeds United shirt landed in time to cheer them onto Wembley, (Thanks Alfie !!!)

At the very end, I also received a lovely suprise which was a Thankyou Card from Taylor, who's one of our original Starlets when we launched 4 years ago.

Hit's you hard emotionally things like this, especially when it's out of the blue, so massive thankyou it's very appreciated & absolutely I'll be around for a little time longer & continue to see you further progress on your great journey, your a smashing player❤️⚽

The Sun shone down on our SOCCER STARLETS Thursday classes this week & the girls did too in both our 5-8 year old (6-7pm) & the 9-14 year old class (7-8pm) on the Morley Glen playing fields.

They all worked on the most important part of the game "their first touch" to help setting themselves up when receiving a pass from their body shape & the ball being played to their preferred foot.

We worked on shooting practice so their 1st touch had to be made out of their feet & to then to run onto the ball with pace to help get them extra power which can't happen from a standing start.

After a good 15 minutes we could see a vast improvement with much stronger strikes on goal which was ace to see.

Our SOCCER STARLETS players of the week for each group were firstly Francesca 🏆chosen by coach Ewan after seeing her confidence increase week on week & Taylor🏆 by Danny & Rob for her defending great in her matches & scoring almost every shot she had on goal by using the above technique 💪

Top turnout last week SOCCER STARLETS considering a good few had Grassroots Football UK evening matches at the same time as our sessions.

Both classes focused on various shooting games,1v1 2v2 and mini matches & as ever played in great spirit & enthusiasm.

Our standout performers chosen this week from our 5-8 year old class was Avani followed by & Lily in our 9-14 year old class. Both for skills dribbling past their peers with pace & determined to win the ball back for their team when out of possession.

Last but not least, many of the girls who attend our Thursday Girls Starlets classes we're involved on Saturday in two seperate Cup finals playing in the West Riding Girls Football League in their first ever seasons together.

Massive congrats to Tingley Athletic FC U10's who came out victorious 🏆& Morley Glen Juniors AFC 10's for just coming up shy in a very close encounter vs an opponents from a higher Division.

Massive achievement to both sets of kids & coaches 👏👏👏

SOCCER STARLETS "GIRLS ONLY" Thursday classes focused on passing & moving at pace.

Coach Ewan is studying for his Advanced Duke of Edinburgh Award planned out & delivered sessions for both our 5-8 year & 9-14 year olds.

From experience as an adult, its very stressful & overwhelming delivering this for the first time especially being only 17 year old & must say he executed this with flying colours 🙌

SOCCER STARLETS worked on technical play & speed this week whilst trying to keep the ball fully under control including playing mini & full match that had everyone involved.

Our younger group of 5-8 year old's kicked off our Thursday nights classes & its great to see them improving every week but more pleasingly watching them coming out of their shells.

Ivy took this weeks SOCCER STARLETS trainer of the week 🏆 for our younger class, for her energy & desire in the game at the end along with her newly found close controlled dribbling 😍 🙌

Our 9-14 year old's class did the same but was tweaked to cater their ability.

Super proud of everyone with Levani catching the eye via her various skill sets🏆& to me it's evident she spends a lot of time practicing as much possible after school based on her ability.

With all these girls doing so well at their Grassroots Football UK clubs, its brill seeing how much they've improved especially from never kicking a ball before !!

Top turnout on Thursday evening from our SOCCER STARLETS on their newly back to back classes.

They had to braved that shocking rain & cold weather without any moaning or leaving early which is a massive credit to them.

In our beginners class our 5-8 year old's worked on overloading & overlapping when attacking, passing to their team mates in spaces created then took this into a game at the end.

Cora was chosen by fellow Starlet Emily who gave some lovely feedback why she was awarded the🏆 but must say all the girls deserved one as they were class 🙌

With the weather changing for the worst, our 9-14 year old's followed on by simply wanting to play a match for the full hour & helped them keep warm.

Always brilliant to hear at the end when calling time, they didn't want to go home but just carry on playing 💪 but sadly the evening light had gone & rain took this out of my hands.

Lara who was chosen by coach Jamie🏆for non-stop running throughout & again all contributed ace !!

Very memorable day for Lara as earlier she was awarded the Player of the Day medal at Leeds Utd holiday Club 👏👏👏
