Version 2 Smart tachographs:

the facts…

There have been a lot of rumours in the industry about version 2 smart digital tachographs becoming compulsory, even for older vehicles. But you may not have to retrofit your older vehicles, even after the August 2025 deadline...

These are the facts for vehicles which require a tachograph:

It has been mandatory for all new vehicles to be fitted with smart tachographs since 15th June 2019.
From 21st August 2023, new vehicles will be fitted with a version 2 smart tachograph.
Vehicles currently equipped with a non-smart tachograph must be retrofitted with a version 2 smart tachograph for international journeys by 31st December 2024. Those fitted with a version 1 smart tachograph must be updated to a version 2 smart tachograph for international journeys by 21st August 2025.
Therefore, from 21st August 2025, it will be compulsory for older vehicles to be retrofitted with a version 2 smart tachograph – but only for international travel.
If you only carry out UK based journeys after 21st August 2025, you will not need to retrofit a version 2 smart tachograph to vehicles which predate 21st August 2023.

You must still make sure that you download your vehicle unit and driver card data at the correct intervals and keep robust records. Please make sure that your current download equipment is compatible with version 2 smart tachographs, or update to a device which can be used to download data from a smart tachograph.
