Woodside Cottage, Northumberland is surrounded by scenic countryside, in an area peppered with beautiful walks and country pubs.

Our perfect weekend at Woodside would consist of;
-A drive to Kielder Forest - Forestry England and Kielder Water, driving via the Kielder Forest Drive (12 miles of majestic woodland and breath taking views).
At Kielder Water, we may explore the castle or take a picnic to enjoy on a stop off after walking along the waterside.
-A meal and drink at a local pub, our favourites are Bird in Bush Elsdon Northumberland, Redesdale Arms and William de Percy Inn & Crêperie. Sometimes we travel a little further to eat at The Rose & Thistle Alwinton or The Star Inn - Harbottle and enjoy a wander up the Coquet Valley.
-In the mornings, we take a short 3-4 minute walk to Rochester Relish - The Last Café in England for a delicious breakfast.
-On an evening, we light the fire in the colder months, and cosy up to watch a film or play a board game.
In the warmer months, we like to sit out in the garden with a few drinks and nibbles and play cards.
-If a meteor shower or show of the Northern Lights is predicted, we get wrapped up and head outside once darkness falls.
Woodside Cottage is an ideal base to spot these wonders as it is in a designated dark skies park.
- The waterfalls near to Woodside are breathtaking, for a short walk we head to Hindhope Linn (5 minutes drive) and for a longer walk, we head to Hareshaw Linn (carpark in Bellingham is a 20 minute drive).

Your break can be as action packed or as relaxed as you like, but we guarantee you will not spend hours stuck in traffic jams!

We were lucky enough to spot a full lunar rainbow, or moonbow, in Northumberland tonight!

Lunar rainbows are much rarer to see than normal rainbows, they need very specific conditions to form...one of which being very dark skies. The Northumberland National Park is a designated dark skies park, making it an ideal location to spot a moonbow!

SHOOTING STARS TONIGHT 🌠🌠🌠

Do not miss the best meteor shower in years!

From around 7pm in dark sky locations and clear skies you will start to see a few shooting stars, the rate will gradually increase reaching to many dozens per hour.

The Geminids meteor shower is now at its peak and after tonight rates will drop- so go out tonight if you can. Even in your garden you may see a few per hour.

You want to be looking South Easterly, directly above and North East for hot spots, the darker the skies the better ( minimal light pollution)

Woodside Cottage, Northumberland is in the Northumberland National Park. This a designated Dark Skies Park, making it one of the best places in the UK to spot the Northern Lights and to stargaze!

This happened this morning! 🤯 Time for bed now 😴

Hi everyone it’s looking very promising tonight,

You most likely will see a glow to the North as soon as dark , camera will pick up colours,

The aurora fluctuates, you may have to wait a while to see any structure / movement and dancing.

Tonight - 18th September/ 19th

At this moment there looks like a chance of aurora visible by eye as a glow and colours on camera over the UK where clear and low light pollution and Northern Europe.

There’s a bit of uncertainty if it will get stronger, but definitely worth keeping an eye on.

The challenge for tomorrow is cloudy skies, so even if tonight’s display is not as strong as tomorrows with clearer skies this is the one to try.

This should be the biggest storm of the season yet, stronger than last weeks display.
