Ahead of the Paralympic Games, we recognise the achievements of Northumbria graduate, 6-time Paralympian and 3-time Paralympic champion Stephen Miller MBE who recently announced his retirement from para athletics.

Stephen’s career spans over four decades, during which he has inspired countless individuals with his dedication, resilience and passion for sport. Stephen first represented Great Britain at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics, becoming one of Britain’s youngest track and field gold medallists at the age of 16. During his time at Northumbria and following his graduation in 2002, he competed in every major para athletics championship up until the 2021 European Para Athletics Championships in Poland, earning 34 major international medals.

Stephen’s final competition will be at the CP Sport National Championships in Coventry on 8 September, marking the end of a remarkable career. CP Sport helped to kick-start Stephen’s career in Para athletics 30 years ago and the date also coincides with the final day of the Paris Paralympic Games.

In addition to his sporting success, Stephen is Founder of Positiv and SMILE Through Sport, an organisation dedicated to ensuring that disabled people get the opportunity to take part in sports. He will host a celebration event at St James Park on 11 September, with proceeds going to SMILE Through Sport.

Ahead of the Opening Ceremony for , we wish Olympic success to Northumbria University graduate Adam Olaore.

Adam is already a champion and has won events that have been a stepping stone for British Olympic gold medallists Nicola Adams and Anthony Joshua. Born in Lagos, he moved to Newcastle when he was 12. From his very first boxing session at 14 he was hooked, winning his first amateur boxing gym competition aged 15 and his first youth national championship at just 17 years old.

Adam won silver at this years’ World Boxing Championships and then went on to win the 13th African Games in Ghana. His passion and commitment to be the best brought him and his coach, mentor and fellow Northumbria graduate Richard Stoneham back to Sport Central, working with colleagues from Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation on regular physiological testing to study endurance, power, and fatigue resistance.

Good luck Adam and Team Big Future - www.teambigfuture.com.
