We represent parents and children in public law care proceedings. These are often very distressing and heartbreaking cases and despite our best efforts sadly the outcome is not always positive, and children cannot always be reunited with their families. There are occasions however when a parent can make significant changes to their lifestyle and create loving and stable homes for their children. It is hugely rewarding when this happens as it is always in the best interests of children to grow up with their own families if it is safe for them to do so. On Friday we received a glowing review from a happy mother. Whilst Angela worked extremely hard on this case supporting and advising the client, at the end of the day, it was this mother who turned her life around and now has her children in her care. We are so thrilled for her.

Joanna Longe from Longe and Co has taken part in the free legal advice rota for many years giving advice on domestic abuse and family law. Here she explains why she is proud to volunteer for NCLS:

This month is domestic abuse awareness month.
Angela is currently training to complete the Independent Domestic Violence Advisor Diploma.
This will equip her with all the skills needed to fully assist with victims of domestic abuse.
Angela will not only support our clients but she will guide them through the court process which can be daunting.
Domestic abuse can consist of, but is not limited to, the following:
1. Physical violence
2. Financial abuse
3. Sexual abuse.
4. Psychological and emotional abuse
5. Coercive control
We offer legal aid to victims of abuse who may be eligible depending on the benefits they receive and their income.

Longe and Co are proud to join the Norwich Legal Walk 2022 to raise money for the Access to Justice Foundation’s local branch, the Eastern Legal Support Trust.

The Foundation supports communities excluded from accessing justice by increasing the availability of vital free legal advice through grant making to the local charities that provide it.

The money raised will allow the Access to Justice Foundation to continue supporting free legal advice charities to survive, thrive and continue improving lives.

6th April 2022 - No Fault Divorce - New Divorce Laws

Today, the most significant change in divorce law in several years comes into force. Parties are now able to divorce each other without apportioning blame. Potentially this will reduce family conflict and make what can be a traumatic experience for parties hopefully less difficult and more amicable. This should have a beneficial impact on any children of the family as well as reduce stress for the parties themselves.

Under the new Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020 one partner or both acting together can file for divorce without having to give a reason. A statement setting out that the marriage is over, will, on the whole, be sufficient for the court to proceed with the divorce. It will no longer be possible to contest a divorce except on very limited grounds including jurisdiction.

This has been a long-awaited change in legislation. We have had a surge of enquiries already today from parties who want to start proceedings but do not want to ‘blame’ the other party .
