Breohtbrú Víking jewellery & crafts
This page is entirely dedicated to my historical craft & jewellery work.
I have been exploring how merovingian /Frankish necklaces far from only using native made beads, used a lot of glass jewellery made in and around Asía according to studies.
With this in mind, I have put together this intricate Merovingian noblewomans' necklace using a combination of European, indonesian and Indian made glass beads which roughly correspond to bead types discovered in finds. This will be the last of this type of jewellery I will make while í focus on other historical jewellery projects.
Please note this is not a replica of a specific find.
I have put my etsy shop on holiday mode while í try to sort out some teething issues.
Sorry for inconvenience!
WEST STOW ANGLO SAXON BEADLINE RECREATED.
Design sketch from museum originals and completed handpainted recreation.
Whew! That was the workshop done, and what fun we had 😃
One or two struggled, but so far everybody seems to have enjoyed themselves learning a new skill. It is a small, intimate little group, which I felt able to manage easy.
These are a few of the best painted pieces we ended up with.
Many thanks to Renew for asking me to do the workshop this week.
Not a selling post, just showing off the work that was made.
Shall be holding workshop in bead painting tomorrow. Hope it goes without hitch!
PREVIEW POST!
Lately have been mastering some bead painting techniques of my own, to see if i could recreate one of the Anglo Saxon bead lines from West Stow.
Because i do not currently have the facilities, i have not made the actual beads. The aim was to collect the correct shapes matching th originals, then replicate the patterns.
Proper post coming when i have the very last bead in place.
Quick little project for this evening. PLYWOOD LOKI PENDANT!
Replicating the Mikulčice gold lunula.
The shaping has more or less finished. Now commencing with the gold wire filigree.
After taking some time from it, I feel ready to return to making the Mikulčice 9 lunula.
This demo is a wee bit awkward due to lack of experience of working while filming but rest assured i am experienced with the rotary tool and was in no danger! 😂
Still in very early stage but here is the progress so far..
Ideas & finalised design for bone flute. The patterns are based on bronze age decorative motifs.
Inspiration time!!
The Gilling Sword and other treasures from the Viking exhibition @ Norwich Castle Museum, East Anglia.
This is what I will be using to make my own bone flute. For now, I am hung up on the designs í want to put on it? Anyone got ideas on what to carve into it?

Update: I am in the process of designing my own logo for my craft business Hæþen Cræfts. At the same time, I want to start seperating my crafts from the rest of my art, so i am going to create a new page for my crafts and keep this one for the painting/Illustration. This wont be till the logo is finished.

Following completion of the gruelling project that was the Kingsbrooch, I have not felt a great insentive to start on anything new and felt I needed a well earned break for a bit.
Now that í have got myself another commission to get my teeth into í finally feel ready to start work again.

Fabrication is often looked down on as a form of metalworking. However í argue that its important to learn the techniques of fabricating before starting on forging.
This is my start with the angle grinder on the Oseberg food knife. Not much right now. Needs á lot of work.
Full body shot and details of The Kingsbrooch. Details of Garnet cabochons & cell-work, and Amber cabochons.
One of the 3 Beasts of Battle, the eagle was a sacred creature to native Germanic tribes. Its keen eyed prowess was revered by tribal warriors who emulated its skills through warfare and hunting. The eagle represents also the heavens and was believed to carry the brave souls of the slain to paradise.
The starting cost for this is £200.
Sneak preview of the Kingsbrooch nearing completion. Just a few touch ups here and there and it will be ready to go up!
