The University of Nottingham has worked with teachers of GCSE maths resit students for some time.
Through the Education Endowment Foundation, in 2024-25 they will be running a randomised controlled trial of an approach they successfully trialled in 2021/2

It's not often that a large amount of funding is provided for rigorous research in the FE sector.
Mastering Maths is lucky enough to have funding for a randomised controlled trial, but if we don't recruit enough teachers, the trial will not go ahead.

Question: I am head of maths, looking after GCSE maths across our college network of four settings. How many teachers can I put in for the Mastering Maths research study?
Answer: You can put in TWO teachers in each of your four settings - eight teachers in all. In each setting ONE teacher will be randomised into the intervention group and will take part in the professional development. The other teacher will be in the control group.
