OUBbC: Oxford unpick keys and win the hallway dance as they waltz to victory - Cherwell 16/11/2021

Calum Isaacs analyses Oxford University Basketball Club's recent victory against Loughborough:

OUBbC: Oxford unpick keys and win the hallway dance as they waltz to victory - Cherwell Oxford 92-68 Loughborough 4s In a sports hall thronging with tens of people, the Equinox dance crew put on a halftime show. I know even less about dance than I do about basketball, so will not offer commentary on the routine. Yet, as they moved about in their various motions, I did think, “hm… I...

CHIARA SPINIELLO, HINTZE FELLOW AT THE UNIVERISTY OF OXFORD'S DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS, HAS BEEN APPOINTED HEAD COACH OF OXFORD'S WOMEN'S TWOS BASKETBALL TEAM

16 November 2021

Spiniello, Hintze Fellow at the Department of Physics and Research Fellow at Christ Church, Oxford, is the new Head Coach of Oxford University’s Womens Twos Basketball Team.

"The Oxford University Basketball Club (OUBbC) is truly lucky to have Coach Spiniello heading the women’s Twos and Freshers’ programmes," said Bill De La Rosa, President of the OUBbC. "She brings to the Club decades of experience coaching throughout Europe and a relentless passion for basketball that will benefit all those around her. I’m thrilled to welcome her."

Originally from Naples, Italy, Spiniello has been playing basketball since she was 3 years old, reaching Serie B2, the third highest professional level of Italian basketball.

Spiniello began her coaching career when she was 16 years old, as Assistant Coach for a group of young girls (U13W) and as Head Coach for Polisportiva Pro Cangiani’s mini-basketball team in Naples. When she moved to the Netherlands to start her PhD in Astrophysics, she served as Head Coach of De Groene Uilen’s men’s senior team in Groningen for two years.

Spiniello’s last stop before joining OUBbC was in Munich, Germany, where she was Head Coach of München Basket Club’s U15W, U16W, U18W, and U20W teams for four years, climbing to the DBB Bezirksoberliga. At the same time, she served as Player-Coach for the Club’s W2 team, winning the Kreispokal (Munich’s local cup) and leading her team to a higher league promotion.

Spiniello is an enthusiastic, “noisy,” and unconventional coach who believes that hard work, team atmosphere, and fun are the three crucial ingredients to build a successful basketball team. She looks forwards to an amazing basketball season and having lots of fun on and off the court with the club and her team.

Bill De La Rosa, Clarendon Scholar and Doctoral Candidate, has been elected President of Oxford University Basketball Club (OUBbC).

Oxford University’s Basketball Club is one of the university’s largest and most popular sports clubs composed of three men’s teams, two women’s teams, and a wheelchair basketball team.

De La Rosa succeeds Maike Meier who led OUBbC through the Covid-19 pandemic and a successful 4-1 record over the University of Cambridge in Varsity competition.

De La Rosa brings his extensive experience in policy, communication, and leadership into play in his service as President of OUBbC. Prior to becoming president, he worked as a Program Coordinator in the Pima County Administrator’s Office in Arizona, served as a Policy Analyst in the Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and represented the Obama administration as the youngest Public Information Officer in the Office of Refugee Resettlement.

Reflecting on his appointment, De La Rosa notes: “OUBbC has a rich basketball tradition and is home to some of the oldest and most successful university basketball teams in the United Kingdom, and I am honored to be leading it. I look forward to contributing to the Club’s continued success and ensuring its long-term sustainability.”

Raised in South Tucson, Arizona, De La Rosa earned his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Latin American Studies from Bowdoin College, two master’s degrees from the University of Oxford—one in Migration Studies and another in Criminology and Criminal Justice—and is now pursuing a DPhil in Criminology.

Among his accomplishments, De La Rosa has been named a Gates Millennium Scholar, a John Lewis Fellow, a Harry S. Truman Scholar, a Marshall Scholar, the 2016 National Male Hispanic Scholar of the Year, and in 2020, a Southern Arizona ‘40 under 40’ honoree. Upon completing his doctorate, De La Rosa plans to enroll in Yale Law School, where he has been officially accepted.
