Company Role Description

This is a part-time on-site role for a Domestic Cleaner located in Plymouth. As a Domestic Cleaner, you will be responsible for cleaning and sanitizing designated areas of residential properties. You will also be responsible for following safety procedures and ensuring that all cleaning equipment is properly maintained.

Qualifications

-Prior experience in domestic cleaning
-Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, proper storage, and disposal methods
-Physical ability to lift and move equipment and supplies (up to 25 lbs.)
-Strong attention to detail and time management skills
-Excellent communication and customer service skills
-Ability to work independently and follow instructions

Today, I was struck by a profound realisation that shook me to my core. As I reflected on my week, I couldn't ignore the glaring disparity in how we value certain professions over others.
When was the last time you asked your hairdresser, beautician, joiner, or car valet about their hourly rates? Probably never. Their services are perceived as invaluable, and we willingly pay for the quality and convenience they provide.

But then, the harsh truth hit me. Three times this week, I was confronted with the heartbreaking reality from prospective clients "my current cleaner charges £12 per hour." £12 per hour? That's not just a figure. It's a damning indictment of a system that shamefully undervalues and underpays those who tirelessly maintain the cleanliness of our homes.

Consider this: cleaning isn't just about scrubbing floors or dusting shelves. It's about the unwavering dedication it takes to travel from their homes to yours, to invest in equipment, to ensure your sanctuary gleams with perfection. Yet, do they have insurance? Do they get the opportunity to take holidays? On £12 per hour?
I recently asked the now new client, why they were seeking other services, and the response was heart-wrenching: "My current cleaner had to get a new job." Of course, they did! At £12 per hour, 2 hours of cleaning barely cover basic costs. Five homes a day? That's a gruelling 12-hour shift when you factor in travel. Is that sustainable? Absolutely not.

Cleaning is a luxury, but so is your Starbucks coffee, your fancy lunches, or dinners out, even the occasional takeaway. I've heard comments like, "My daughter has a degree, she doesn't get that." But ask yourself: how many people does your daughter pay out of her hourly rate? How much insurance does she need? How many holidays does she pay for out of her hourly rate.

It's time for a seismic shift in perspective. Let's stop reducing cleaners to a mere hourly rate and start recognising them for the indispensable role they play in our lives. They don't just clean. They gift us with time - time to cherish our loved ones, pursue our passions, or simply unwind.

Know that if you call a company that there is a lot like any other company that goes into the price you are charged.
So, my dear friends, let's not just settle the bill and bid farewell to our cleaners. Let's honour their worth. Let's salute their unwavering dedication. And let's remember, their service transcends mere cleanliness. It's about enriching our lives in ways we often overlook.
