Breaking free from Gossip, Drama & Rumours

Catherine, the princess of Wales has cancer.

Over the last few weeks, it was almost impossible to avoid seeing any sort of rumours and gossip about the whereabouts of Catherine. Or the many many jokes about the photoshopped photograph she uploaded on Mother's Day.

The internet makes it so easy to read all sorts of gossip or seeing how someone is being made fun of on a daily basis. It's truly shocking how many unkind things we're able to read on so many different platforms. Whatever happened to 'Be Kind'?

We clutter our free time with gossip, rumours, glowing screens... If we all pause and think for a second I think we would all agree that this isn't the best way to spend our free time. I could think of so many better things to do like going on a nature walk, playing with my son, cooking a nice meal, meeting up with friends, enjoying a coffee with my husband...

Whether you're a royal fan or not, the message is clear: Rumours hurt. Catherine was basically forced to do a video and tell millions of people that she's got cancer. You can see she's very nervous, upset and still struggling with the shock of the diagnosis. Those are all very human reactions.

Let this be a lesson for everyone to be a bit more mindful, considerate and kind.

Let's declutter our free time and enjoy the truly important things in life.

Love always wins!

Remember that your home should be a sanctuary, a space where you can truly live and thrive. It's where cherished memories are made and where you can unwind after a long day.

But when clutter takes over, it can feel like living in a storage unit rather than a haven. Let's reclaim that sense of tranquility by simplifying our spaces and letting go of the excess. After all, it's not about the stuff we accumulate but the moments we share.

Let's create room for more joy and meaningful experiences in our homes. 💖

A very productive hour with a client today.

🌿Decluttered a whole car boot full of stuff.
🌿Checked what storage the client already had.
🌿Categorised everything.
🌿Measured the space.
🌿Took lots of notes, pictures and videos.

This session was part of an ongoing project with a client.

Next up ➡️ Looking for storage boxes and shelving units and then organising everything to perfection 🙌🏻

I just love how different my clients are and all the different jobs that come with it.

Use the good stuff!

One of the many advantages of not drinking alcohol is you can have an amazing tasting drink at any time of the day. 🍸

This is me, drinking an alcohol free drink on a Thursday afternoon 😁🙌🏻

And yes, I'm using one of my 'good' glasses 🥂

I've decluttered a lot of kitchens and 99% of my clients have stuff in them that they only use once a year. So those special items sit in the cupboard for the majority of the year, taking up precious space.

My advice is to ditch your 'everyday dishes/glasses' and keep your good stuff. This way you'll free up lots of space and you can enjoy those beautiful dishes every day of the year.

What do you think? Would you dare to remove your plain stuff and only keep the nice ones?

Cutlery 🍴

What does your cutlery drawer look like?

Are you keeping excessive amounts of coffee spoons, bread knives, veg peelers etc. in your drawer? Or maybe other random stuff that doesn't really belong there?

This is your reminder to do a quick cutlery declutter today!

Make three piles.
1) Keep
2) Keep but in a different place
3) Donate/Dispose

What prevents us from decluttering?

There are so many reasons why we may not declutter our home.

Having worked with many families over the years, I have a better understanding of why many people struggle to declutter.

Those are the top 4 reasons I keep hearing ⬇️

1) ⌚ Lack of Time ⌚
Busy schedules and hectic lifestyles can lead to a lack of time for decluttering.

2) 😫 Overwhelm 😫
The sheer volume of items and the thought of sorting through them can be overwhelming which makes it hard to get started.

3) 😪 Decision Fatigue 😪
Constantly having to make decisions about what to keep, donate or discard can lead to decision fatigue, making it harder to follow through.

4) 💪🏻 Physical ability 💪🏻
If you're unable to move, shift, lift items then it's almost impossible to declutter on your own.

What's your biggest reason to not declutter?

I'm not a huge fan of New Year's resolutions as I don't feel you should wait for a new year to begin to start making changes. However, as a lot of people have time off during the festive period, there's usually lots of time to focus on your home. So this can be a good time to reflect and create a vision on how you want your home to feel, function and look.

Ask yourself a few questions...

❓How does your home make you feel?
❓Does it make you feel stressed?
❓Does your home function well?
❓Can you find things easily?
❓Am I using each room in my home effectively, or are there spaces that could be repurposed?

🌟Answer all questions honestly.
🌟Create a plan
🌟Make changes

Don't forget to ask for help. Most things are easier if you don't have to do it alone. 💕

Three decluttering mistakes that I'm often coming across when meeting new clients.

20/11/2023

Unpopular opinion!

Stop buying your kids piles and piles of junk this festive season!

I know we all want just the best for our kids. But what if the 'best' isn't actually best?

The amount of stuff some kids get for Christmas is making my head feel dizzy. And it seems every year we add more and more opportunities to shower our kids with even more stuff.

🎁 1st of December boxes
Today I found out people do '1st of Dec boxes'. What on earth... 🙈

🎁 Advent calendars
Ok so the idea isn't brand new. I think we all know the chocolate ones... But now there are advent calendars with a new toy behind each door. Imagine! That's 24(!!!) additional toys in your house before it's even Christmas 🤯

🎁 Christmas Eve Boxes
No. Just no. Why?!

🎁 Stocking
Of course we can't forget the stocking. Filled with more stuff...

🎁 Christmas
So now we finally made it to Christmas and your child has already had several gifts from the 1st of Dec box, 24 new tiny chunk toys from the advent calendar plus a few more gifts from the Christmas Eve Boxes and a stocking full of other random stuff.
So that's probably at least 35 gifts!!! PLUS the main Christmas gift, some medium gifts, some small gifts and all the gifts from grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends...

I'm slightly worried I may have missed any 😅🙈

Can you see why your kid may get completely overwhelmed?

Can you see why your house feels like it's full of clutter after Christmas?

Remember:
If you buy any gifts this Christmas (I'm sure you will), shop with some of the amazing small businesses we have in the area! 💕 Quality over quantity 💕

How clutter affects your sleep 😴

We all know that getting a good night's sleep is essential for our physical and mental wellbeing. Yet, many of us struggle to have a restful night. One often overlooked culprit that may be sabotaging our sleep is clutter.

Below are some examples of how clutter can affect your sleep 👇

⚡Anxiety and Stress
Clutter in your bedroom can be a constant source of stress and anxiety. When your sleeping space is filled with disorder, it can subconsciously remind you of unfinished tasks or looming responsibilities. This anxiety can make it difficult to relax and fall asleep.

⚡Distraction
A cluttered bedroom can be a minefield of distractions. From piles of laundry to stacks of magazines, these visual distractions can keep your mind racing when it should be winding down for sleep.

⚡Allergens and Dust
Clutter often accumulates dust, allergens, and even pests. These can trigger allergies or respiratory issues, leading to restless nights filled with sneezing, coughing, and discomfort.

Does any of this sound familiar to you?

My gift giving rule for my son...

As a minimalist and declutterer, it's not surprising that I'm not a fan of huge amounts of physical gifts.

Many years ago, my husband and I decided not to buy any gifts for Valentine's Day anymore. Then we also dropped the gift exchange on Christmas and our anniversary. And last year we decided to not buy each other any gifts for our birthdays either. We'd rather use the money and do something nice instead like a day trip or a nice dinner. No clutter. Just some nice experiences and memories.

I don't want to collect clutter and I don't want my son to drown in clutter either. But I also understand that kids love presents and my son is no exception! So we decided on a 2 gift rule. One physical gift and one experience. Plus a party of course.

The gift on the left is from us, the other one from my mum. And tomorrow (on his birthday), we'll go to the trampoline park (his choice).

Your future self will thank me 😅

This is a gentle reminder for everyone with kids who are now back at school/nursery... You don't need to keep every bit of artwork your kid brings home. 🙌😅

Imagine all the piles of paperwork you DON'T have to deal with by the end of the school year 😁

Hands up if you needed to hear this! 😅

Do you need more space and organisation in your freezer?

Does your freezer often become disorganised and.you struggle to find anything?

Try reusable freezer bags 🙌

Not only are they more eco-friendly compared to single-use plastic bags, but they also maximise freezer space far better than bulky Tupperware containers or oversized supermarket packaging.

The bags are available in various sizes and from different brands.

Just make sure to label everything 😉

Have you used them before? Do you like them?

If you're a small business and sell them, let me know in the comments as I love to support small, local, independent businesses 🩷

Do you feel like you need a fresh start?

In a world full of constant noise and distractions, it's easy for us to become overwhelmed and stressed.

Physical clutter:
Life is a masterpiece, and just like any work of art, it thrives in spaces free from excess and chaos. Get rid of anything that has no real purpose in your home.

Digital clutter:
From overflowing inboxes to a sea of unused apps, it's time to take charge of our digital spaces and reclaim our sanity!

Mental clutter:
Just like tidying up our physical spaces brings a sense of calm, decluttering our minds can lead to newfound clarity and inner peace.

Have you heard of packing cubes?

Packing cubes are becoming more and more popular. For a good reason!

Packing cubes are lightweight and portable organisers used to compartmentalise and keep belongings neat and tidy within suitcases, backpacks, or travel bags. They are essentially small fabric containers.

They are available in a variety of sizes.

The main benefits of packing cubes are:

✳️Easy packing and unpacking
✳️Keeps everything nicely together
✳️Stuff won't move around in the suitcase during travelling
✳️Protects your belongings
✳️Quick and easy visibility
✳️Keeps everything clean

You can thank me later 😜😅

How Minimalism has changed my life.

In early 2018, I watched a documentary called on Netflix (now on YouTube)

Watching this documentary made me realise that I spent a lot of my time sorting, organising and rearranging... CLUTTER!

I decided all that clutter has to go so I rolled up my sleeves and got rid of stuff. A lot of stuff!!! It felt great! I don't know exactly how much stuff I got rid of but if I had to guess then I'd say appr. 60-70%!

I felt great relief every time another item left my home.

Once I've decluttered my physical stuff I realised that there's so much more to minimalism.

⚡ I started decluttering my calendar. No more jam-packed days! I started being a lot more mindful of my time and energy. Instead, I used the time and energy for self-care and more time with my family.

⚡ I stopped buying lots of crap from Amazon! I used the money to make overpayments on our mortgage instead and used some of the money for experiences.

⚡ I reduced my time on social media. Too much negativity on there that drained me.

⚡ I stopped reading the news on a daily basis. It was too easy to get caught up on all the negative things that happen around the world.

⚡ I quit my full-time job and started my own business which I run part-time so I can spend more time with my son.

The list goes on... There isn't enough space on here to list it all 😅

People who inspired me along the way:

Wokingham Town Council wants your old mugs. You know you have way too many 😅 Time to start declutterering your kitchen. Even if it's just your mugs 🙌

Yes we know this may provoke a few funny responses, but it's a real request for the kitchen cupboard variety!😂
Wokingham in Bloom are looking for around 50 mugs for a new project they are running with school children which will help preserve the Wokingham wild bee population.
So, if you have some old mugs that you don't use any more or that don't fit the new colour scheme in your kitchen, then please drop them off in the entrance to the Town Hall (opp WHSmiths).
‼️ There'll be a box there for you to put them in from next MONDAY 19th - THURSDAY 22nd June.
Not only good for the bees but a great way to re-use a standard household item.
Thank you!

12/06/2023

Yes, it's that simple 🙌

The less stuff you own the less stuff you need to clean or maintain and the less stuff you need to store.

It'll make your life so much easier!

Letting go of it is the hard part. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you feel overwhelmed. Everything is so much easier if you don't have to do it alone.

Quick Guide: Herbs & Spices

Depending on the size, the kitchen can by far be the most time consuming place to declutter and organise. Checking food and drinks for use by/best before dates, Deciding which plates and mugs to keep, Sorting through the kitchen junk drawer... The list goes on.

If you want a clutterfree kitchen, you have to start somewhere.

Below is a quick guide for herbs & spices to get you started...

1) Look through all your cupboards and get all of the herbs & spices out.

2) Look at each jar/packet and check the expiry/best before date. Anything that's past the 'use by' date should be disposed of. The content should ideally go in your food waste bin or on your compost. Anything with a 'best before' date can still be consumed.

3) Now check the herbs & spices that you've got left. Will you use it? If yes, put it to one side so you can organise it later with the rest. If no, put it in a donation pile. Local food banks are always happy for donations if they are unopened. If it's open and you won't be using it then it can go in your food waste bin or compost.

4) Now that you're left with only the herbs & spices that you will use, you can start organising them. The best organiser for this are spice racks or narrow drawers with a special jar organising insert. If you don't have the space for a rack or if you don't have this kind of drawer then a Lazy Susan is a great organising solution. Or put them all in a storage container (without a lid). Make sure the name of the herb/spice is on the lid.

I hope this helps and is giving you the nudge you needed to get starting 😊
