Frogpool + Cusgarne 1-3 St Ives Town

St Ives Town made in through to the next round of the George Everly cup, but they made hard work of it against a spirited Frogpool side. After loosing to the hosts 1-0 in a friendly a few weeks ago, the Saints were out to put things right, which they did… kind of.

St Ives started brightly and created a few early chances, with Oakley Clary-Brom and Matt Dunn both coming close to opening the scoring. Beau Stevens hobbled off with an injury on 15 minutes and his replacement Ant Cornish had two quick fire chances, but both times headed over the bar. The Saints continued to dominate possession and we’re finding space in behind the frogpool back four, but a mixture of good goalkeeping and poor finishing meant the score remained 0-0 approaching half time. Frogpool appeared to be going for the long ball approach and it wasn’t going to plan, until a mix up in at the back allowed the frogpool striker a chance to score, but Jack Stewart was on hand to deny him. With minutes to go until the break, St Ives hit the hosts with a quick one-two, as Ross Duncan fired in two quick goals to double his tally for the season. The first, a long throw from Liam Cregan was fumbled by the keeper and Duncan smashed home and then moments later found himself one on one and prodded the ball into the bottom corner. St Ives deservedly went into the break 2-0 to the good.

It’s been a common theme that St Ives seem to struggle after half time and once again, it was hard to recognise them from the first half as play resumed. A game that seemed to be all but over was now a contest again, as Frogpool dug in and looked to get back into the tie. They should have done just that, as a Frogpool winger broke free down the left and laid the ball on a plate for the oncoming striker, who unforgivably fluffed his lines from 8 yards out. Chances at the other end kept coming and going, with Asa Donaldson, Jeff Robinson and Duncan all being denied by the Frogpool keeper, who it has to be said was in inspired form and was easily the best player on the pitch on the day. His saves were giving his team mates a chance to get back into the game and that’s exactly what they did. St Ives lost possession cheaply and this resulted in a corner, which was swung in and headed home by the Home defender. Immediately, it was almost 2-2, when a loose ball fell to a Frogpool striker, but his effort flew past the upright. It was a nervy end for St Ives who were desperately looking to put the game to bed and finally, they got their third. Robinson collected the ball on the edge of the box and after some brilliant hold up play, he rolled the ball into the oncoming Clary-Brom who fired home emphatically just before the final whistle.

On another day, St Ives could have scored 7 or 8, but until they find that quality in the final third, teams will always have a chance. A game of two halves for Frogpool, who couldn’t keep up in the first half but came out a completely different side in the second and gave us a good game in the end! Good luck to them for the rest of the season.

St Just 3-3 St Ives Town

A much-improved performance from St Ives on Saturday, who were looking to put last weeks disappointing defeat behind them. With no league fixtures until the 28th August, St Ives arranged 2 more friendlies to fill the gap and first up, we travelled to St Just to take on their much-changed squad and the game didn’t disappoint.

For the first 20 minutes, St Just struggled to get near St Ives and the pressure eventually told when a great move was finished off by Oakley Clary-Brom at the second time of asking, his first effort saved well but he was there to tap home the rebound. Tom Morris should have made it 2-0 but his tame effort was stopped well by the home keeper. Against the run of play, St Just won a penalty when David Booles scythed down the St Just winger in the box, but our new hero between the sticks Adam Rosevear pulled off a fine save to deny. St Ives made it 2-0 shortly after when another good move saw Liam Cregan pick up the ball just inside the box and roll the ball home. St Ives could and should have put the game to bed with the chances they created, but St Just wouldn’t go away and won another penalty when Beau Stevens was judged to have clipped the advancing striker inside the box. Rosevear again pulled off a cracking save, but the rebound fell into the path of a St Just forward who slammed home from close range. The midfield 3 of St Ives were a pleasure to watch in the first 45 minutes, but the St Ives 3rd goal bypassed them altogether. Andy Barry advanced forward from centre back and clipped a through ball to Asa Donaldson, who controlled well, ran through on goal and drilled the ball home to make it 3-1. It should have been 4-1 just before half time when Morris found himself 1 on 1 with the keeper, but he was caught in 17 minds and the keeper did well to smother his attempt to round him. Seconds before the whistle, St Just broke down the left and a low cross was tucked home to make it 3-2 at the break.

Both teams made some changes on or around half time and the entertainment wasn’t as thrilling as the first half, but both sides had chances to add to their tally. Another Saints debutant Rafael Morales was denied twice by the woodwork, his first effort a 40 yard half volley crashing against the bar and then followed that up by a great effort cannoning off the post. Nick Clymo was on hand to hit the rebound off the post, but his effort was well saved. St Just then drew level after their striker showed incredible composure to win the ball back, hold off 3 players before slotting an excellent through ball to his team mate, who finished well through a sea of defenders. Morales had a chance to put the Saints ahead again when he chopped inside and shot, but the keeper was on hand again to make a smart stop. With both sides tiring towards the end on another muggy afternoon, the chances subsided and although Morales was sent through 1 on 1 at the death, the referee decided there wasn’t enough time to see what would have happened.

All in all, St Ives could have scored 6 or 7 on another day but St Just grew in confidence as the game went on and did well to weather the first half storm. Their new side has a good balance of youth and experience and it was a great test for our side. We wish St Just luck for the rest of the season and thanks for hosting!

Man of the Match – Adam Rosevear / Charlie Thornton

Goals: Oakley Clary-Brom, Liam Cregan, Asa Donaldson.

Penzance Reserves 3-2 St Ives Town

St Ives carried on their trend of dropping points on the opening weekend of the season as they were defeated at Penlee Park on Saturday. Whilst a depleted Saints were missing numerous players due to boardmaster’s and the summer ‘silly season’, Penzance were able to rely on help from above as their First team were without a game. Unfortunately for St Ives, that made all the difference as all 3 goals were scored by players introduced from the firsts.

An incredibly hot and muggy afternoon made it tough at times, but both teams had early chances to go ahead. Penzance took the lead when Lewis Caspall stole the ball off a saints defender and run through to slot home. St Ives could have equalised immediately but the home keeper did well to smother the ball after a scrambled in the box. St Ives did manage to draw level after Liam Cregan won the ball back in midfield and then fed the ball to Ross Duncan, who chipped over the advancing keeper. St Ives looked to be gaining confidence after the goal but from their own corner, they found themselves picking the ball out of their net seconds later after a brilliant counter attack by Penzance. A cross from the right found Caspall again who was in the right place at the right time to double his and Penzance’s tally. 2-1 at half time.

Although Penzance were the better side throughout the game, there wasn’t much to separate the teams at times and both teams could have scored more on the day and the chances were coming and going. Asa Donaldson broke down the left and cut inside with a great run into the box and only came to a stop after being brought down by the struggling defender. Duncan stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot to level the scores. Injuries to Cregan and Joe Day meant the saints were down to bare bones trying to hold on as long as they could, but Penzance got their noses in front once again as Rolandos Samnauskas jinxed inside from the right and rolled the ball effortlessly past our debutant keeper Adam Rosevear. St Ives struggled on but didn’t create another clear cut chance in their hunt for an equaliser.

Credit to Penzance, they deserved their win on the day and we look forward to the reserve fixture back at the saltings.

Penzance Reserves vs St Ives Town AFC

After a busy pre season schedule, St Ives finally get their season underway with a trip to Penlee Park to face Penzance Reserves on Saturday (2:30pm kick off). The Saints were victorious in a reversed friendly a few weeks ago, but that will not have any bearings on either side tomorrow as the competitiveness of the fixture will surely bring out the best of both sets of players.

We look forward to seeing our regular supporters and hopefully get some new ones along the way this year!

***Pre Season Result***

St Ives Town 4-2 Dropship

The Saints finished their pre season fixtures on a high by defeating Dropship down at the saltings on Saturday. In warm but almost perfect conditions for football, St Ives made a less than perfect start and went 1-0 after 10 minutes. Dropship look good for their lead for the first 20 minutes of the game until St Ives sorted themselves out and fired in a quick fire double. Asa Donaldson broke though the defensive line and drilled an impressive finish into the top corner and then 2 minutes later he turned provider, setting up Ant Cornish to put the saints ahead. The hosts rattled the post twice and wasted a few more opportunities before the break but went in at half time 2-1 up.

The second half began and saw the saints extend their lead, with Curt Richards finishing well and it should have been 4 minutes later. Cornish burst into the box and a coming together was judged to have been a foul by the Dropship defender, to surprise of most in attendance. The resulting penalty was fired against the upright, but it wasn’t too long before St Ives got their 4th. A Charlie Thornton shot was spilt into the path of Cornish, who finished well from a tight angle. Dropship looked good in possession but failed to do much with it, but they did manage to pull one back with only their 2nd shot on target minutes before the end to make it 4-2.

All in all it’s been positive pre season for St Ives and they’ll be looking to take their growing performances into their first game of the season against Penzance on Saturday!

***Pre season Result***

St Ives town 1-4 Porthleven 1sts

A game of two halves is the only way to desribe this fixture, but St Ives can take a lot of positives from the performance of the first half into their last pre season friendly on Saturday.

St Ives should have gone in at half time 1-0 up but for a strange offside call (lino still using 2006 offside rule 🤪), however they were much the better side and only a couple of smart saves from the travelling keeper kept them at bay.

After a string of changes just after the break, the saints lost their rhythm and conceded 3 goals in 10 minutes and Port added a 4th with 15 to go. Credit to Porthleven for their second half performance, they will cause a lot of sides problems this year. Remi Andrew added a cool consolation goal to his pre season collection, finishing well after a through ball from midfield.

St Ives will host Dropship this Saturday in their last friendly before the first game of the season. Kick off at 2:30pm!

***Pre Season Result***

St Ives town 12-1 St Dennis

A very warm day down at the saltings this afternoon, both sides lacking in subs but credit to St Dennis for giving their all for 90 minutes and for making the trip down with a few of their younger players coming up from the youth side.

Some very good goals for the spectators, including a wonderful Hat trick from Kieran Eastwood, scoring directly from a corner sandwiched between two lovely finishes. The rest of the goals came from Asa Donaldson (2), Remi Andrew (2), debutant Jeff Robinson (2), Liam Cregan, Danny Paynter and finally getting his first goal for the club to round it off was Toby Horsell. Good luck to St Dennis for the season ahead.

This Tuesday, it’s Porthleven Football Club Official’s turn to visit the saltings and kick off will be 6:30pm.

*** Pre season Result***

St Ives town 3-3 Pendeen reserves

Another step in right direction in Saturdays fixture, against a well drilled Pendeen side containing a small number of their first team. Pendeen took the lead mid way through the first half and then St Ives equalised shortly after with a bicycle kick from Curt Richards. Pendeen retook the lead just before the break with a well worked goal.

St Ives came out much stronger second half and went ahead with 2 quick fire goals mid way through the second half. A mistake from the keeper lead to the equaliser, kicking the ball against the pressing Beau Stevens and rebounding into the goal and then a great run from Asa Donaldson saw him brought down in the box. Liam Cregan stepped up and rolled the ball into the corner to make it 3-2. Pendeen were fortunate to equaliser with 15 to go as a tame shot snuck through the legs of the St Ives goalkeeper (👀👀) and rolled into the net.

Both teams had chances to win, but it ended level and I think after a thoroughly enjoyable game, that was the fair result. Good luck to Pendeen for the season ahead!

This weekend, we host St Dennis down at the saltings and kick off will be 2:30pm. See you there!

***Pre season Result***

St Ives Town 3-1 Penzance Reserves

It was looking like St Ives we’re heading for another 1-0 defeat with 15 minutes to go on Wednesday night, but a late Ross Duncan hat trick ensured that our second friendly ended in a win. The overall performance from the Saints was a slight improvement from the game against Frogpool, but there is still room for improvement and we will look to implement that on Saturday!

Good luck to Penzance for the season and we’ll see you in a few weeks!

🔵⚪️🔵 Match Result 🔵⚪️🔵

St Ives Town 1-2 Troon Afc

St Ives hosted third placed Troon on Saturday and having already beaten them twice earlier in the season, they would have fancied their chances of grabbing all 3 points down at the Saltings. Unfortunately, though, a combination of a determined defensive display from Troon and an inability to break that defence down by the Saints led to Troon inflicting a first home defeat of the season.

St Ives started brightly and after showing signs of an attacking intent early doors, they took the lead after 5 minutes when a long through ball by Toby Horsell was headed down by Sean Roberts into the path of Ross Duncan. Duncan’s first-time volley was straight at the keeper, however the ball snuck through his grasp and made its way into the net. It was one way traffic for the majority of the half but a lack of clear-cut chances meant the score remained 1-0 as the game approached half time. Troon managed to create their first chance of the half, when a poor Saints free kick led to a counter attack. The Troon striker danced his way through the whole St Ives back line and fired a shot at goal, but his effort was well saved by Charlie Eldridge. Duncan was unlucky not to add to his first goal when he blasted an attempt from 18 yards, but the keeper denied him by unintentionally absorbing the shot with his face. After a few minutes of treatment, the keeper returned to his feet and continued with the game.

St Ives would have come out for the second half thinking their dominant first half display would eventually lead to more goals, however, as the minutes counted down and the goals didn’t come, it inspired Troon to push forward and attempt to get back into the match. Eldridge has made some incredible saves in recent weeks and he was at it once again, saving an initial shot well and then recovering incredibly quickly to save the follow up. Another gallivanting run from a Troon fullback led to a corner and after a poor clearance, a cross back into the box was flicked over the head of Eldridge and levelled the scores. St Ives were still bossing possession, but struggled massively to break down a well organised group of players and failed to create many opportunities. Harvey Troon had a chance to score when a long cross found it’s way to him, but his effort flew over the bar from close range. Huxley Kirby had the best chance to score when he snuck in at the back post to meet another cross, but his header sailed just wide of the post. With St Ives throwing everything they could forward, a lack of concentration lead to them conceding once again. After good work down the right-hand side from the winger, his cross found it’s way to the back post and allowed an easy tap in for an unlikely Troon lead. As much as the Saints piled on the pressure and threw players forward, they were unable to find a way through.
