Pleased to have been invited to speak at today's event to mark 20 years of "Working Well Together" (WWT), a joint Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and industry campaign to help reduce death and injury in the construction industry. The Lancashire & Merseyside, Manchester WWT Group and the Cheshire WWT Group came together for a unique joint event that included a mock trial based on a fall from height accident scenario in the workplace.

NEW - BS 8630:2019, Specification for portable stagings and folding trestles
The British Standards Institution (BSI) has published a draft of public consultation of BS 8630: 2019.
This is a full revision of BS 2037 and BS 1129, and introduces the following principal changes:
• the deletion of requirements for portable ladders which are now specified in BS EN 131; and
• new requirements and tests for trestles and stagings including new requirements for side protection for stagings and the strength and stability of stagings and trestles when used together.

NEW - BS # # Specification for the use of counterbalanced edge protection systems in permanent applications
BSI has published a proposal to prepare a standard specifying the requirements for the design, performance, testing, marking, and instructions of manufactured free-standing guardrails that rely on mass and friction and that are intended to protect workers from a fall hazard. These guardrails are not fixed to a structure.

EN 13374 covers temporary edge protection. Permanent edge protection installed into the structure is covered by BS 6180. BS # # will cover counterbalanced edge protection systems that are installed and remain in place for the life expectancy of the facility.

Draft for Public Consultation (DPC) - BS 7883:2019 Personal fall protection equipment – Anchor systems – System design, installation and inspection BS 7883: 2019, when published, will supersede BS 7883:2005 (which will be withdrawn). It provides information relating to anchor devices and recommendations for their installation and use in conjunction with personal protective equipment for protection against falls from a height.
