5w40 Engine Oil is recommended for cars with higher mileage . I.e. 180k etc
The thicker grade oil will protect the older engine components better.
Actual fully synthetic oil is far more temperature stable, able to give long lasting protection, doesn't break down as fast under sheer stress, doesn't get acidic. Fully synthetic oil is made from group 4 or 5 synthetic base stocks, like esters or pao.
The cheap UK fully synthetic oil is made of normal crude oil stocks , then they boil it with steam which changes it's composition a bit, and call it synthetic because it's been through one more process before bottling.
It doesn't have all the enhanced qualities of an actual synthetic.
This is why its important and oils such as Castrol are not actually fully Synthetic.
