You’ve got to heat up a large surface area with a tiny flame before hovering just long enough over the join to make your solder flow. The hardest part being, of course, not letting solder run inside the tube so the figure of eight can’t move on its axis freely. - - - It’s very important to secure the male end of the catch so that it doesn’t fall off while attaching the figure of eights. Life becomes much more difficult when the bangle is having a figure of eight on both sides. Two interesting bespoke pieces completed for the sake customer, using their own gold and diamonds. I tried to use forging techniques where possible when shaping the gold for the stirrup earrings, as if made by a blacksmith. It was fun working out the logistics of how to make authentic-looking stirrups. Tapping a ring into the perfect roundness we expect isn’t always easy to do without breaking open the solder join. This is especially true with 9ct gold, a harder metal (thanks to its non-gold alloys), or like this ring, a 9ct and 22ct blend; worsened by its reasonable depth. Metal is far easier to work when it’s red hot, so if you’re having trouble shaping, get some gloves and tap it round immediately after annealing. I see a lot of work pegs on here with dozens of holes in them, because the jewellers are drilling vertically. I myself was taught to drill this way too, and I always thought it seemed nonsensical. So instead, I opt for a ‘dart throw’ approach. I’ve found this gives more control and is less strenuous on the drillbits and the flexi shaft itself.
