Like all places your baby sleeps, make sure the mattress in your baby’s pram is firm, flat and waterproof.

The padded sides of a pram may trap more heat, so it’s a good idea to keeping the hood down when you’re inside.

If the room where your baby sleeps is really warm, lighter bedding and clothing such as a low tog sleeping bag or a thin sheet can be a good choice to keep your baby from getting too hot. Baby sleeping bags advise what tog to use for each season or temperature, so that can be handy to use as a guide.

However, every baby is different and it’s important to keep an eye on them for signs of overheating. Feel your baby’s chest or the back of their neck (your baby’s hands and feet will usually be cooler, which is normal). If your their skin is hot or sweaty, remove one or more layers of bedclothes or bedding. In really hot weather it’s fine for your baby to sleep in a short sleeve vest or just a nappy.

Unfortunately we cannot comment on the safety of individual products or recommend products, as we don’t carry out any testing or research on them.

Even though it might seem like your child isn't saying a lot on the surface, it doesn't mean they aren't learning internally 💪

Every child develops at their own pace and begins talking in their own time 💜

If you feel extremely worried about your child's language development, please talk to your Health Visitor or GP who can refer you to a Speech & Language Therapist 😊

Babies in hot weather

Hot wather can be quite difficult to manage with a young baby. It can change feeding and sleep patterns. Babies often wake more when its hot (adults do too!) and often like to feed more frequently Here are some tips!

Keep the bedroom cool by keeping the curtains drawn and the windows open. Try to get a through draft between rooms.
(For those of you outside the UK, yes its true, we don't often have air conditioning here as its hot for about 2 weeks a year!)

If baby has a bath, keep the water cool.

Keep clothing and bedding light and cotton is best. Layers are good so you can add something in the early hours of the morning if the temperature cools a little.

Use a fan to keep the air circulating, but don't point it directly at the baby.

Avoid direct sunlight, keep babies in the shade as much as you can.

Remember babies will probably need to feed more often in the hot weather to keep themselves hydrated.
Breastfed babies don't need any extra water if they're under 6 months. They will feed little and often and the milk will be more watery to keep them hydrated.
Formula fed babies may need a little water but can also have more milk.
For combination fed babies, try to have set times for formula feeds and then breastfeed responsively in between so baby can stay hydrated, there's no need for water.
All babies over 6 mths can have a little water with solids.

It can get very hot and sticky when feeding and cuddling babies in hot weather. Putting a muslin square between your skin and baby's will help. But believe it or not, skin to skin will actually cool baby down.

Babies and young children explore the world around them by putting things in their mouths. As they start to move around and pull themselves up on furniture there’s no limit to what they can find.

Whilst most of the time this exploration is harmless, some products are dangerous - which is why you should store all cleaning products, medicines, button batteries and small parts out of sight and reach.

Also, look out for products that contain a bittering agent, such as Bitrex, that puts children off swallowing things they shouldn’t.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve caught a child trying to eat? Let us know in the comments.
