Balance & Routine on Yachts 🛥️
Balance and routine can significantly enhance productivity and overall well-being while working on yachts. However, due to the nature of the yachting industry, maintaining a healthy balance or consistent routine can be challenging. This applies not only to exercise but also to adhering to a healthy diet, sustaining healthy habits, socialising, and staying connected with loved ones.
It is essential to carve out personal time that positively stimulates both the mind and body in ways distinct from work-related activities. This might include exercise, reading, writing, yoga, or any other activity that ignites your passions.
Here are some strategies I found helpful whilst onboard to help maintain a routine and stay motivated:
⏰ Set one alarm and get up as soon as it goes off – avoid hitting the snooze button!
👟 Lay out your workout clothes the night before to minimise morning decisions.
🏋️♀️ Pre-plan your workouts to streamline your exercise routine.
🏃♂️ While in port, make the most of your surroundings by getting fresh air, running or walking, and exploring the local area.
🧘♂️ If space is available onboard, invest in additional equipment such as weights or yoga mat and engage in mindfulness practices, yoga, or body-weight workouts.
Prioritising these activities brings more balance into life, leading to a greater sense of self-accomplishment, a positive mindset, and an enhanced ability to enjoy life onboard. It’s important to remember that sometimes it may not be possible to stick to a strict routine due to work demands or exhaustion. Allow yourself time to rest and recover.
It's natural to feel disappointed when unable to work out or follow a routine. However, be kind to yourself. Reflect on your accomplishments, both big and small, and enjoy the journey! This approach will help maintain a positive outlook and a healthier, more balanced life onboard.
