SchoolsHistory - Classroom resources and content since 1998
SchoolsHistory started life as a small website for one class. It soon became noted by other pupils and developed to cover the old National Curriculum and GCSE specifications. At first the content was not ‘just’ history based. It served as a tool for colleagues teaching Literacy who wanted to have access to materials for web-page re-write activities and the ICT Department who had plenty of skills to develop but a lack of resources and ‘real’ data.
Changes to the curriculum altered the focus of the site. It started to focus more on creating content to support learning from outside of the classroom. This tied in with work that our contributors were doing outside of schools. We had started delivering CPD at events by the Schools History Project and Historical Association. Our content writing was also in demand from publishers: Hodder Murray and Heinemann respectively. The site became somewhere to use our notes to provide extra content, resources and ideas.
Coupled with this was collaboration with other teachers. This was the age before Twitter. There were face to face meetings, including via the European Union Virtual School programme. A Collaborative History Teachers’ Discussion Forum contributed much to the teaching of History and became highly popular. As these are now defunct, Twitter and places such as here are the ‘go-to’ locations. We intend to provide ideas, resources and pupil friendly content on a regular basis.
SchoolsHistory contributors have won Becta Awards, Participated in a Bafta Winning Documentary, Authored several textbooks, Written E-Learning Modules to Degree Level, Provided CPD at numerous conference and represented Classroom Teachers on the Subject Association Secondary Committee.
