It's Mental Health Awareness Week.

From the 15th to the 21st of May the Mental Health Foundation is raising awareness of Anxiety.

Running a business is bound to cause us to be anxious at times but it can quickly have a significant impact on your ability to concentrate or sleep, making important decisions and dealing with even simple day-to-day tasks can then become much more significant challenges to deal with.

In a study by Mental Health Uk, 88% of female business owners reported poor mental health compared to 77% of their male counterparts. But, are women more likely to be open about their health?

If you are struggling make sure you are making time to relax, exercise and get some fresh air. Cutting down on alcohol and caffeine can help too.

Having a plan for your business can also help, it helps to reduce the feeling of lack of control. Even if the plan initially is just for today or for this week it can help, it doesn't have to be a plan to conquer the world.

GRAB ATTENTION, ABOVE THE FOLD!

📰 ‘Above the fold’ is an old newspaper term for talking about the information on the top half of the newspaper. Newspapers used to be folded in half so the information above the fold had to gain attention and encourage the public to want to read more (and therefore buy the paper!).

💻 This concept works the same with your website.

The first section of the landing page your visitors see before they have to scroll is known as ‘above the fold’.

It is critical your messaging, branding, images, and calls to action etc are all designed perfectly to grab attention and get the visitor to stay and read more.

✅ How you can perfect your ‘above the fold’ content:

➡️ Highlight the problems they are facing
➡️ Tell your visitors the benefits they will get from using your services or products
➡️ Highlight the results your visitors will gain from working with you and how that will make them feel
➡️ Use great images.
➡️ Include call-to-action buttons now, not just at the bottom of your page. And, remember not everyone will be ready to pick up the phone and call you. So, include 2 call to action options where possible!

There are a number of things you can do to improve your Google ranking.

Todays tip is to ensure you have a 1 page dedicated to 1 specific search phrase that you want to rank for.

That may mean if you offer 5 different services you will need 5 different pages, 1 for each service.

It is not sufficient to have 1 page that quickly lists the services you offer as this will not demonstrate your competency, knowledge, and experience in each individual service.

Google likes to direct people to dedicated content pages and so is more likely to rank you for specific pages, rather than a general page that has the potential to make you look as if you are a ‘Jack of all trades and master of none’.

PS. Ensure your new dedicated content pages have sufficient content on them! An absolute minimum of 300 words but preferably over 400 words is ideal.

PPS. Do not use content that is already on another page of your website or elsewhere on the web. Rewrite the content so that the text on each page is 100% unique.

Do you advertise in print?

If you aren’t doing these 2 things, you will be losing enquiries.

💡People like to have a look at your business before they get in touch.

Including social media platforms in your advertising is great for this, especially if you don’t have a website.

But we found with most companies we searched for from their printed marketing it was not obvious (and sometimes downright impossible) to find them.

From business names that don’t logically match the social media profile name, to logos that are nearly an exact match for another business; if your potential clients have to click in and out of profiles to track you down, they will soon give up and move on to another company they can find with ease!

Ensure you are simple and obvious to find or include your profile name next to your social media icons.

Another option is to use a platform like Linktree which is easy to use even for non-techy folk. This way you can include a simple QR code that can be scanned to reveal a list of direct links to your social media, your website, your contact details and more. Perfect for printed marketing!

This takes us to point two…

💡 Include more than 1 way to contact you.

By only including a phone number you will be losing potential clients.

Some people won’t want to call you in the first instance, so being able to text, message or email you first is perfect.

Failing to offer this alternative will lead to potential clients moving straight on to your competitors that give them other contact options. Don’t miss out!

This saves time, effort and ensures you use the right tools for the job!

In building a house, the foundation is critical to the structure's stability and durability. Similarly, in marketing, establishing a strong foundation is critical to the success of the campaign. This foundation includes things like defining the target audience, creating a unique value proposition, and establishing clear goals and objectives.

LinkedIn is a fantastic channel for businesses and should be considered as part of your social media marketing strategy.

There are personal and business profiles much like Instagram and Facebook, but the difference lies in that your personal profile will often gain more engagement than a business profile.

It is fantastic for networking with other business owners, but don't be put off if you aren't B2B, remember every person on LinkedIn is also a consumer, so it is worth giving LinkedIn a try!

Add posts regularly to your business page but more importantly, you should be posting your personal profile. Don't be worried about showing your personality and sharing your thoughts and knowledge.

➡️ Use Hashtags, 3-4 is ideal.
➡️ Add images or videos to grab people's attention.
➡️ Be consistent with your posting 2-3 times a week if possible.
➡️ Run a poll, these are great for market research and are very popular!

Marketing is remarkably similar to fishing - No this isn't a joke, read how relating fishing to your marketing could help you get a better understanding of how you could improve your marketing techniques.

Fishing is a tactical sport with an element of chance, you choose your chosen species of fish and that will reduce your potential fishing locations.

You then need to know where in those lakes your fish like to loiter. There are tools you can use to help you or you can use historical results, education and your best guess to pinpoint where to cast your line.

What bait to use is your next challenge, here, you can also utilise general knowledge, experience, and trial and error!

Casting one line out with one type of bait will limit your results, but by scattering bait across your swim (chosen fishing area) you will draw fish to your line, increasing the odds of getting a bite. Multiple lines in the area will increase your probability of a catch even more.

You have a bite, now you need to gently reel in your catch. Too fast and you will lose your fish, too slow and you risk the same problem. Do it well, utilising all the tools in your fishing kit, and you will get your dream catch.

There will be good days, and bad days, but practice, perseverance and a willingness to learn will mean you will become better at your sport before you know it. However, if you are expecting to cast a couple of lines sporadically in various pools without much time or effort in preparation then you can expect to be disappointed with your results. Continue to do the same, and you will probably give up on the sport thinking it is a waste of time, while those around you are reaping the benefits of their hard work.

Marketing is more like fishing than you may have thought!

If you want to be an expert at marketing and increase your leads, pay attention to the actions of great fishermen, you could learn a lot.
