💛...In the meantime, here’s a few interesting facts about fossils 🤔💛
💛 “Fossils” - The name comes from the Latin word "fossus" meaning "having been dug up." 🪨
💛 They are the preserved remains or traces of animals, plants, and other organisms from the long distant past.
🌿🦣
💛 Fossils vary in size, from the microscopic, originating from single cell organisms, to the gigantic, coming from dinosaurs and trees. 🦕🌳 They can be many meters long and weigh many tons.
💛 A fossil normally preserves only a portion of the organism, usually that portion that was partially mineralised during life, such as the bones and teeth of vertebrates, or the chitinous exoskeletons of invertebrates.
💛 Fossils may also consist of the marks left behind by the organism while it was alive, such as the footprint of a reptile. 🐾These types of fossil are called trace fossils. (or ichnofossils)
💛 Fossil ferns 🌿 were widespread in the carboniferous period (320 million years ago) and are often found in coal seams.
💛 Oh... and they can also look very beautiful, in fact people have worn them as decorative objects for thousands of years. 🥰
