25% increase in GP appointments in Somerset than before the pandemic
Bernie Marden, our Chief Medical Officer and Dr Tim Norbury from Taunton Vale Healthcare have been talking about the latest GP data which shows a 25% increase in GP appointments in Somerset than before the pandemic.
GP Teams in Somerset have been working hard to ensure patients get the care they need. In 2023, they delivered 3,600,868 appointments, an increase of 25% from 2019.
This is the equivalent of each person in Somerset seeing their practice six times this year. 42% of appointments took place on the same day.
Read all about it on our website https://tinyurl.com/474psss7 and listen to Bernie and Tim on talking to Charlie Taylor BBC Radio Somerset at 1:09 (Bernie) and 2:08:15 (Tim).

Did you know you don’t need to see your GP for hay fever treatment?
Hay fever and seasonal allergy treatments such as tablets, eye drops and nasal sprays are all easily available at low cost from your local pharmacy – no prescription from your GP required!
Antihistamines are medicines often used to relieve symptoms of allergies, including hay fever, and can easily be bought at low cost from local pharmacies or supermarkets.

- Shower and change your clothes after you’ve been outside to wash pollen off
-Stay indoors whenever possible
- Keep windows and doors shut as much as possible

We would like to share some common myths about General Practice vs the reality, shining light on the importance of GPs and practice staff and their desire to provide patients with the best care possible.
Myth 2 – ‘General Practice receptionists do not want patients to see their doctor’
Receptionists are the gateway between patients and the practice clinicians. The work they do is essential and exceptional, despite the unprecedented circumstances currently facing general practice.
Our receptionists do everything possible to get appointments in diaries. They are also trained navigators who want to get patients to the right person, at the right time. This includes signposting to local Pharmacies, MSK Practitioners, Community Support Groups and Health Coaches, to name a few.
Please be assured that connecting you to our clinicians is their number one priority. If you would like to see a GP, please ask our receptionists and you will be offered the next available appointment.
We would like to share some common myths about General Practice vs the reality, shining light on the importance of GPs and practice staff and their desire to provide patients with the best care possible.
Myth 1 – ‘GPs do not work hard enough’
It can sometimes be difficult to secure a GP appointment, and this might lead people to believe that GPs aren’t working hard enough or for long enough.
This is untrue; GPs regularly work 10-12 hour shifts in order to see as many patients as possible. The reality is, there are simply not enough GPs per patient.

Vaccines are the number one defence against measles, mumps and rubella. Make sure your child gets both scheduled doses of the MMR vaccine to offer them the best possible defence against these serious diseases.

Online service makes registration easier for patients.
We are using a new online service that makes it easy to register with this GP surgery.
New patients just need to fill in an online form to get started. They do not need proof of address or immigration status, ID or an NHS number.
Paper forms are available for people who need them.
The service is designed and run by the NHS. It aims to cut practices’ workloads and make GP registration easier for the public.
Use QR link below to register or visit the surgery website on: https://wiveliscombesurgery.co.uk/patient-registration/
