Last week on 18 students took part in Huish Taskmaster!
The group were asked to do a selection of 6 random activities, doing everything from rewriting lyrics of famous songs to going on a scavenger hunt! They also designed trophies out of tin foil and completed a prize task (as per the TV show). This involved justifying “the best chocolate bar you could find in your local supermarket”.
Safe to say, our winners went home with a fantastic hoard!
Thank you to those members of staff who participated by having their selfie taken as part of the scavenger hunt.
Bonus points were given for seniority of staff member, with the winning team getting a photo with Richard Huish Trust CEO, John Abbott!

Sociology and Criminology students recently visited Shepton Mallet Prison, which dates back over 400 years and is believed to be one of the UK’s most haunted places.
Key parts of the visit included:
⛓ A tour of the site and cells that were in use from 1625-2013
🔐 A mock cell lock-in experience, where the ‘separate and silence system’ was re-enacted (the teachers commented that this was their favourite part of the day!)
👩🏫 Classroom sessions where students learned more about infamous inmates including The Kray Twins and Suffragette Mabel Capper
👻 Meeting one of the many resident ghosts
Students enjoyed a fun, informative and sunny day – despite the eerie setting!

A reminder to current Year 1 students
Make sure to reapply for the bursary, you will have been sent an email in the last week. We recommend you do this sooner rather than later so everything is finalised before returning in Year 2.
If you are a Year 1 student starting in Sept, you will be sent information after the Welcome to Huish event.
Last week, The Huish Law School hosted a Murder Investigation Day run by Bangor University.
Law students explored a major crime scene briefing, the criminal investigation (including the role of the coroner) and then looked at a murder case. Using their knowledge of A Level Law and fatal offences, students then had to work out ‘whodunit’.
The Huish Law School team commented that “we definitely have some future detectives, solicitors, barristers, and judges in the making!”
🎉 CareerFest is in full swing! 🎉

Kennedys Early Careers
The Richard Huish College Psychology Department hosted the annual Inter-college Psychology Academic Poster Competition earlier this week.
Students from Queen's College, and Wellington School also took part in the afternoon event and displayed their research posters alongside Huish students’ work. All the students had conducted their own research on a wide range of topics including 'Do animals help improve the mood of people with dementia?', 'Hemispheric dominance in creative subjects', and 'The effect of indoor sports on well-being'.
The judges for the day consisted of Huish Course Manager of Biology, Sarah Marshall, Course Manager of Visual Arts, Richard Aydon, and Assistant Principal for Humanities and Social Sciences, Martin Wren. They were tasked with reviewing the 22 entries looking at scientific design, presentation and the positive impact the research could potentially have for society.
Students were very articulate, and it was a great way to showcase student oracy. The winning entry was awarded to Huish student, Ella Gloyn, for her research into 'How does the news impact our outlook on life?'. Two highly commended were also awarded to Isabella Vallance, Lucinda Williams and Izzy Whiting from Wellington School, and Ella Morgan and Lauren Evered from Huish.
It was a great cross college collaboration with Huish IT students 3D printing a brain trophy from a MRI scan, and also the Huish Art department printing and displaying the posters for that professional touch.
Last week, Year 1 Academic EnRICH students visited The University of Oxford's Exeter College. 👩🎓👨🎓
As well as having a tour of the college, students took part in:
- A Q & A with current undergrads
- A mock interview
- A taster lecture (with a choice between Philosophy or Materials Science)
- Lunch in the hall
Students fully embraced the day and asked plenty of questions, with one student asking the Admissions Manager “is it right that Cambridge is better?”…
