Have you gained weight during the COVID-19 lockdowns?
Youโre certainly not alone in this. Our changed habits during the lockdown, including decreased movement and increased accessibility to the fridge, means that many of us have gained weight, but another important factor which may have contributed to increased weight gain is stress.
Research has shown that chronic stress may contribute to weight gain. When under stress, our body releases its primary stress hormone โ cortisol. The role of cortisol is to help mobilise energy to our body to deal with the stress, which in turn stimulates appetite and triggers hunger. In particular, weโre more likely to crave high fat, high sugar foods (hello chocolate croissants!). Cortisol has several other negative effects on our physical health, including the increased storage of belly fat โ so unfair!!
So if your waistline has expanded this year, an important first step to getting back on track is to start by practising a little bit of self-compassion. Many of us engage in self-criticism when we are feeling low or have gained weight, but often when we criticise ourselves, this can be a vicious cycle which leads us to feel worse (and more stressed!) and to then engage in more comfort eating.
Starting with some self-compassion by acknowledging that this has been a challenging year is important, and can allow you to focus on whatโs going to be helpful, rather than getting bogged down with negative self-talk. Practice speaking to yourself like you would speak to a close friend or loved one and remind yourself that staying on track with healthy eating is hard! With a focus on self-compassion in mind, you can then shift your behaviour towards being proactive about weight loss. Here are my top three tips to help you decrease your stress levels and to get back on track towards your goal weight.
1) Focus on stress management. Decreasing our stress levels can help reduce cortisol levels, which can be an important part of weight loss. Two simple strategies to de-stress and decrease your cortisol levels is to make sure that you are getting a good nightโs sleep, ideally 7-8 hours, and increase your exercise. So get your walking shoes on and enjoy the sunshine, and make sure you turn off the Netflix and get to bed on time!
2) Consider journaling. Writing your thoughts and feelings down can be a great way to de-stress, to help you express your feelings in an alternative way, rather than engaging in comfort eating to deal with emotions.
3) Enlist support! Sharing our feelings with friends and families is a great way to reduce our stress levels and when we share our goals with others, this also builds accountability. A taste of the Mediterranean without all the calories โ๏ธ
Our delicious lemon couscous with prawns recipe hits the spot ๐ฅ
Step 3, 4 and 5 / 342 kcal / Serves 2 people
Ingredients:
-1 red pepper
-1 yellow pepper
-100g couscous
-150ml boiling water
-Grated zest and juice of 1 lemon
-100g baby plum tomatoes, chopped
-ยผ red onion, finely chopped
-200g cooked, shelled prawns
-100g rocket leaves
-A few sprigs of mint, finely chopped
-ยฝ bunch coriander or parsley, finely chopped
-Freshly ground black pepper
-Lemon quarters, to garnish
Method:
Preheat the grill and place the peppers underneath for 5โ10 minutes, turning occasionally, until the skins blister and char.
Place the hot peppers in a bowl and cover with cling film. Leave for 10 minutes, until cool enough to handle. Skin them and remove the cores and seeds. Cut the flesh into strips or dice.
Meanwhile, place the couscous in a bowl and pour over the boiling water. Set aside for 5 minutes until the water has been absorbed and then fluff up and separate the grains with a fork.
Stir in the lemon juice and zest, tomatoes, red onion, prawns, rocket leaves and herbs. Season with black pepper to taste.
Serve immediately with lemon wedges or transfer to a sealed container and keep in the fridge until youโre ready to eat.

Check out this recipe to make your own delightful cosy treat and enjoy snuggled up under a blanket as the cool autumnal nights draw in! ๐
Serves: 1
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Calories: 200kcals
Steps: All Steps
Ingredients
1 CWP Vanilla or Cappuccino Shake
1-2 shots of espresso or a โshotโ strong black coffee
227mls of hot (not boiling) water
Pumpkin spice (to taste)
Pumpkin Spice:
3 tbs ground cinnamon
2 tsp ground ginger
2 tsp ground nutmeg
1 1/2 tsp ground allspice
1 1/2 tsp ground cloves
Directions
1. Blend the spices together to create your Pumpkin Spice mix
2. Prepare the coffee (1 teaspoon of regular instant coffee mixed with enough boiling water to dissolve it)
3. Make up your shake as normal, add in as much pumpkin spice mix as desired before mixing
Note: mixing this up in a blender will make it extra frothy
4. Sprinkle some spice mix on top
5. Enjoy, preferably while under a blanket with your favourite โsnuggle indoorsโ movie onโฆ

Dieting is so much easier to stick to Monday to Friday, but when the weekend comes all structure goes out of the window, and with it, the diet!
So, how do you make sure your hard work during the week isnโt wasted at the weekend? ๐ช๐ป
Hereโs some tips to keep you on trackโฆ
Whatโs your motivation? ๐
This is one of the main reasons people fail on a diet โ they start losing weight, get really excited and forget the reason that they started dieting in the first place. Once that happens, itโs much easier to make little mistakes: โIโll just have one!โ, โIโll just take today offโ, โIโll get back on track next weekโ. Sound familiar?
It helps to write down your โWHYโ โ what is the main reason you are losing weight?
Do you just want to be able to buy a pair of jeans from Topshop?
Do you want to be able to run around with your kids without getting out of breath?
Do you want to look amazing at the Christmas party this year?
Whatever your motivation, write it down and put it somewhere you will see it a lot (why not make it your screensaver on your phone?)!
If your โwhyโ is with you all the time you are less likely to fail!
Cheerleaders ๐คธ๐ปโโ๏ธ
Get your family and friends on board โ youโve probably already told them you are dieting and what your plan involves (if you havenโt then tell them!) but have you told them why?
Do they know what your goals are? Once they understand your reasons, theyโll be sure to cheer you on (and give you a nudge if you are wavering!)
Make plans ๐
Donโt just let the weekend happen, make plans! Plan to go to the park for a walk with the kids, book a trip to the cinema with your friends, arrange to go to the shops with you mum, or just plan to have a pamper session on your own at home.
Whatever you choose, it really doesnโt matter, but just make sure you are doing something so that you donโt get bored... Itโs often boredom that leads to eating, not hunger!
Simple changes ๐ฅ
Weekends probably used to mean takeaways, going out for a meal with your friends or a big family meal at home on a Sunday.
Donโt worry, you can still enjoy your old life โ you just have to make some simple changes.
