Fungal germs (fungi) often occur in small numbers on human skin where they usually do no harm. However, if conditions are right they can invade the skin, multiply and cause infection. The conditions fungi like best are warm, moist and airless areas of skin, such as between the toes.

A Verrucae (or plantar wart) is usually found on the bottom of the foot and is a small skin lesion usually around 1cm in diameter, but they can grow bigger.
Usually associated with children, verrucae are also a common complaint amongst adults.

It is normal for feet to sweat... but if it starts to cause issues there are a few things that can help!
1) Keep feet clean, an antibacterial soap can help.
2) Use products for perspiring feet - Akileine have a good range which include anti perspiring gel, a foot spray and shoe spray.
3) When buying socks, look for sport or bamboo socks which use the term “wicking”, this means it removes the moisture from the skin.
4) Take extra socks to work/school and change them during the day.
5) Try to rotate the shoes you wear to allow the material to dry, if this is not possible (school shoes/work shoes), there are electrical products you can buy which dry the insides of the shoes, or an old army trick is to use newspaper, scrunch some up and pack the insides, then use the rest to wrap your shoe/boots.

6) trouble bearing weight (standing) on your foot

First shoes

Once walking is established your baby is ready for their first pair of shoes.

Make sure their feet are measured by a trained professional.
Feet should be measured every two to four months to allow room for feet to grow.
Choose shoes with natural linings and socks with a high natural fibre content to allow feet to breathe.
Make sure shoes have some kind of fastening. Hook and loop or Velcro fastenings may be easier than buckles and laces. Do not force your child’s feet in and out of shoes without unfastening them.

Fantastic Fact
Those cute little baby feet are boneless😮
At birth and throughout the first year or so of life, babies’ feet are quite different in many ways from those of an adult. Firstly they are a different shape, being wider in the forefoot and narrow at the heel with the toes often being “curly”. Secondly the bones are undeveloped and at this stage consist of nothing more than cartilage, so they are soft and pliable. This is why small children can appear to do things to their feet without any harm at all, which would certainly injure an adult. The 26 bones in each foot gradually develop throughout the early years, becoming basically bony by the age of 7-8 years, at which point the toes have usually straightened. However, they are not fully developed until the late teens.
Please remember this when buying your little ones their footwear!

As you age, your feet change too. Foot pain is not a normal sign of aging - In most cases something can be done to help.

You have 2 pulses in your feet, one on top (dorsalis pedis artery) and one on the inside of the ankle (posterior tibial artery)!
I listen to your pulses during your first assessment, and if I have any concerns I can use my Kardia Mobile mini ECG to record your heartbeat and send you and your GP a copy!
I also continue to check your pulse by touch at every visit - do you notice?

Fantastic Fact 5!
The average person walks 3000 - 4000 steps a day (about one and a half to two miles) You should aim to walk 10000, but you can add 1000 steps a day and you'll be there in a week!

Fantastic Fact 4!
Peripheral neuropathy affects the nerves in the extremities, including the feet. Here are the common signs and symptoms:

Numbness and Tingling: You may experience numbness and tingling sensations in your feet. It’s like having pins and needles.

Burning, Stabbing, or Shooting Pain: Peripheral neuropathy often causes pain in the affected areas. This pain can be burning, stabbing, or shooting.

Loss of Balance and Coordination: Due to nerve damage, you might notice a loss of balance and difficulty maintaining coordination while walking or standing.

Muscle Weakness: Your feet may feel weak, especially when you try to walk or move.

Fantastic Fact 3!
Leonardo da Vinci once stated, "The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art."

Fantastic Fact 2!
The bottom of your feet have 4 layers of muscles!

Happy Foot Health Week!
This week I shall be posting fantastic foot facts!
Fact 1!
What is a Joint?
It's a structure in the human body at which two parts of the skeleton are fitted together.
We use the names of the two connecting bones to name the joint.
The first metatarsophalangeal joint is where the big toe joins the foot!

As we approach the summer (don't laugh too hard) our feet will be in sandals and the fresh air can dry them out.
Moisturisers are very important to our skin!
Dry skin is prone to cracking, flaking, and breaking, especially for older adults and people with diabetes, whose skin is drier.

I often get asked which moisturiser is the best -
My answer -
The best foot cream is a cream that you like the feel and the smell of, as you are more likely to apply this daily.
A must for foot cream is Urea, it is a natural product and helps to improve the skin’s natural ability to keep in moisture, reducing further moisture loss, whilst also improving the skin's natural barrier.
Popular brands include Flexitol, CCS, Dermatonics… but you can get moisturisers from supermarkets, Boots and Superdrug
For the majority of people, 10% Urea is enough to keep your feet in tip top condition – If you have particularly dry feet or are prone to callus, a 25% Urea maybe more effective, for heels that are prone to cracks and fissures, 40% Urea will help get your feet back on track, but then you should use a lower percentage.

If you find that regular moisturising is not helping your feet, book in to see a podiatrist as you may have an underlying condition we can diagnose and find a treatment for you.

Our feet are more important than many of us think. Not only do they help to keep us upright and to move around, but the health of our feet can even indicate how healthy we are in other parts of our body. Foot health is a big issue that everyone should be aware of. International Podiatry Day is about making sure that everyone knows just how essential it is to look after our feet.

Summer weather can dry out the skin on our feet!
Dry skin is more prone to cracking, flaking, and breaking which is why moisturising is so important for preventing fissures which can lead to foot sores and infections.
Moisturising your feet (but not between the toes) will help to keep them supple as the skin can start to dry out and lose it's natural oils as we age. We also start to lose the fatty pads that cushion the bottom of the feet which means and soles and heels can become dry!
Our feet deserve a treat!
I am often asked which foot cream I would recommend....
The best foot cream is a cream that you like the feel and the smell of, as you are more likely to apply this daily.
A must for foot cream is Urea, it is a natural product and helps to improve the skin’s natural ability to bind in moisture, resulting in the avoidance of further moisture loss, whilst also improving the skin's natural lipid barrier.
Popular brands include Gehwol, Flexitol, CCS, and Dermatonics… but you can get moisturisers from supermarkets, Boots and Superdrug, just check the ingredients for urea!
For the majority of people, 10% Urea is a great maintenance cream and will be enough to keep your feet in tip top condition – If you have particularly dry feet or are prone to callus, a 25% Urea cream maybe more effective, and for heels that are prone to cracks and fissures, a 40% Urea heel balm will help get your feet back on track, then you can use a maintenance cream again.
