Its nice to know that Oddicombe Beach is world record holder Brendon Prince-Long Paddle SUP "go to beach when the winds are picking up from the S - SW".

We love the fact that its flat here when the winds can be clearly pushing a force 4 from the S, SW or W. Perhaps best to stay away though on a NE or E over Force 2.

When you have paddled every beach on the UK coastline, you have a tremendous bank of pictures and memories. I love our coastal communities and will be sharing images of paddling the coastline of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. I also want to hear your memories of today’s beach?
Today is Oddicombe, my ‘go to’ beach when the conditions are kicking off from the South/SW! Deep red sand, a Funicular Railway and there is always a seal or two. Have you ever visited this British classic?

What an exciting initiative!

Transforming Torbay into the mecca of the UK by hosting events like races and the world paddleboarding grandprix is a brilliant idea.

We are collaborating in SUP-HUBs and hackathons to build a strong community and this will be instrumental in making this vision a reality.

The installation of inflation stations will definitely enhance the area's appeal for paddleboarders. Torbay could become a premier destination for paddleboarding enthusiasts!

Why use a Beach Hire operation on holiday?

Why should I hire a paddle board, when I can carry my inflatable with me?

It really comes down to a question of "am I looking for a better-quality opportunity" or by carrying my board "will I be able to match a hire/tour experience using hire equipment"?

At SUP-Torbay we hire beginner and touring rigid (hard) boards and prefer them over inflatables as we have lots of beach storage and love the benefits of a rigid board. Of course, for a group experience wanting a fun raft or mega/giant sup we certainly use inflatables. But for solo paddling, we are all about the rigid board experience.

As a new paddler, due to ease of storage, transportation, weight and cost, an inflatable is a great option for traveling to board in your local community. But why would there be 2 types of board and what advantages are there in using a rigid board when you can buy an inflatable for less than half the price, can carry it to the beach and save beach hire costs?

It's just a board for the kids to play on, that comes out a few times a year and we can stick it in the boot or a rucksack and fly with it. So how can a hire operation or tour company be beneficial to me when I already own a board?

Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Boards are your go-to for easy transport, storage, and versatility. Ideal for those who value low investment, convenience and are on the move. But they sit high in the water, are like a sail in the wind and if slightly deflated there is a lot of drag and no stability.

Rigid Paddle Boards offer superior speed, glide and stability, but require more space and effort to transport. They sit low in the water which offers greater responsiveness and a better user experience.

That's why at SUP-Torbay we recommend to beginners to try both before you invest but by using a hire or tour company whilst on holiday that have rigid boards you benefit from the convenience of a better board that is on the beach and ready to go.

Rigid boards maintain a faster speed allowing you to adventure further with ease and are far less wind affected. The benefits you get on land transporting an inflatable are lost on the water. The benefits you get from a rigid board on the water are heavy to carry and potentially lost when transporting.

Therefore, hiring a rigid board on holiday is perfect for your convenience and outweighs the reasons to travel with your inflatable due to the benefits you get on the water. A rigid board improves your stability, personal ability and manoeuvrability. Increases your speed due to your glide through the water and is an opportunity to explore a better-quality experience.

is a Paddle Boarders paradise, with 20 beaches in 22 miles of coastline, there is always plenty of sheltered water to explore and diverse geology and marine biology in every cove.

Babbacombe Bay and specifically Oddicombe Beach has received the Blue Flag award for its clean water quality for 37 years, since the scheme started. It is a mecca for wild swimmers and where we run our training from and launch many of our tours from due to its location and access to awesome coastal adventures.

In 2023 Torbay witnessed numerous visits from a super pod of dolphins, and many from Blue Fin Tuna. Not to mention regular visits from our residential seals.

Torbay is now known as one of the most extraordinary locations in the UK and has UNESCO status as the English RIviera UNESCO Global Geopark.
