Today is the start of Wakes Week in Tideswell. There’s plenty going on over the next week. The celebrations start today with bands playing at The George Inn and a karaoke night at the Horse and Jockey.

Here is a picture of the well dressing which was completed early today.

What’s the reason behind the name?

Claines is a semi detached cottage, with the attached cottage being called Elgar.

The cottage has been in Tim’s family for over 100 years, as was the adjoining cottage until the mid 1980s.

The family had a passion for music and it seems Edward Elgar, who had strong connections to the Worcestershire village of Claines. This being the inspiration behind the naming of the two cottages.

The Monsal trail is only a short drive or cycle from the cottage. If you choose to bring your bikes, we have a bike shed for storage.

Did you know there are over 200 miles of traffic free cycle trails to explore in Derbyshire? 🚲

The scenic Monsal Trail (pictured) runs for 8.5 miles from Bakewell to Chee Dale and crosses the spectacular Monsal Viaduct along the way 🌳

We took a walk in Buxton today, which started near the car park for Poole’s Cavern/Go Ape.

This took us through Buxton Country Park, a lovely shaded woodland, then up to Solomon’s Temple, which offers stunning panoramic views of Buxton.

This is one of our favourite places to go for lunch. Set by the village green, The Red Lion in Litton is only a short drive from the cottage, but it’s also walkable, taking around 20 minutes.

Come and enjoy one of our Delicious Special Offer Light Lunches. Meals include mushroom and cheese omelette, chefs chicken and leek pie, Owen Taylors country sausages and mash and more!

This is the original front door key for Claines. It's a big chunky key and rather impractical by today's standards. We would have loved to have kept it, but couldn't find anyone who was able to cut additional keys!

A lovely walk which is not far from the cottage. The Monsal Trail can be accessed at nearby Millers Dale and is popular with walkers and cyclists. This walk ventures off the trail, with the reward of the stepping stones.

Imagine crossing these stepping stones in the Peak District 🥾🌿

Sheltered beneath the Monsal Trail, the peaceful nature reserve of Chee Dale is where the River Wye meanders through a deep limestone gorge ⛰️

There are two sets of stepping stones providing access through the dale, and plenty of photo opportunities! 👣

In heavy rain, the stepping stones are often submerged in water, so plan this walk for when the weather has been dry ☺️

The cottage has been closed this month as it’s been getting a new roof! We are staying this weekend as there is painting and cleaning to do following on from this work, so the cottage can be ready for our Easter guests.

We took a walk to Wheston this morning and saw this beauty who came to say hello.

We are due snow and sub-zero temperatures this week in the Derbyshire Dales. The lounge is lovely and cosy thanks to the logburner. We always provide a large basket of logs plus kindling and firelighters so you can enjoy the fire during your stay.

This was a popular event in the village last summer. The weekend is still available to book at the cottage, if you’d like to take the opportunity to attend.

Lunch break at The Red Lion Inn at nearby Litton. It’s a beautiful day here and we are lucky to see two classic cars which have arrived outside the pub. Litton is only a short walk from Tideswell, with options to extend the walk or create a circuit.

Today we took a walk in the nearby spa town of Buxton. We visited Solomon’s Temple, a folly on the summit of Grin Low hill. Finished off with a drink at The Buxton Tap House, the flagship bar of the Buxton Brewery.

Known for it’s mineral water, Buxton has a number of attractions, such as the newly renovated Buxton Crescent and Poole’s Cavern. You can see a performance at the Buxton Opera House, or attend an event at the Buxton Pavilion and gardens, which also has a miniature railway.

Beautiful day in the Peak District and the forecast looks good for the week ahead. We’ve been exploring round the gardens at Thornbridge Hall and walked out to nearby Great Longstone for a spot of lunch.
