I read books, I searched the net. I tried everything EXCEPT letting her cry-it-out because that was just not for me.
Each time I read something useful I tried it in the hope it would be THE missing link but for the life of me nothing worked!
We had not had more than 3 full nights of sleep in 14 months. Her sleep was actually getting worse! We had split nights, early rising and frequent other wake ups!
It was debilitating and soul destroying. I felt helpless and doomed. Was this our life now?
I can’t tell you the sense of relief when I heard the words… ‘we can help, she’ll be able to sleep well in just a few days’.
I felt hopeful and something in me told me to trust, that it was going to be okay.
I let my intuition guide me and I’ve been so grateful ever since.
Because now my daughter self settles and sleeps like a dream and I understand how to manage her sleep.

Waking up several times a night and feeling horribly sleep deprived?
When I became a mother I believed these three misconceptions…
- I believed everything needed to be baby-led
- I believed baby sleep was developmental and not something that could be learned
- I also believed my baby not sleeping was my issue and I ought to be able to figure it out myself, which stopped me getting support for 14 months!
I spent all my time preparing to feed or feeding. My baby fed every 2 hours, day and night with each feed lasting 30-40 minutes.
I was in pain from cracked ni***es and often drifted off to sleep during a feed sitting upright in bed and feeling so guilty if my baby’s positioning had slipped.
I was a shell of myself. I was exhausted and in pain. My baby wasn’t getting the sleep she needed and that’s when I realised I had to speak to someone as this was no way to live.
That’s when I realised how wrong these beliefs were and how they’d stopped me from making a change sooner.
Baby-led is great at meeting your baby’s needs but it’s BETTER when it’s within some kind of framework. For example using your baby’s sleep cues AND awake windows as a guide!
Learning that feeding to sleep wasn’t the only way my baby could fall asleep was a GAME CHANGER.
Being okay with asking for support was LIFE CHANGING
This is where my love of learning about sleep started. I help families because I understand the struggle first hand and don’t want you to suffer silently like I did.
I also don’t want you to burn yourself out with things that don’t work when you could be well rested and enjoying your beautiful family.

✨The recommendations at a glance:
☁️Babies age 0-3 months should have 14-17 hours of sleep
☁️Babies age 4-11 months should have 12-16 hours of good quality sleep including naps
☁️Toddles age 1-2 years should have 11-14 hours good quality sleep
☁️Children age 3-4 years should have 10-13 hours of good quality sleep

Our little ones wake crying for lots of reasons.
☁️ Still tired - if you’re little one only cat naps and can’t sleep longer than 30-40 minutes they may still be tired and want more sleep.
Try resettling your baby or giving them time to resettle by themself.
☁️ hungry - is your baby due a feed? Do you have a pattern to feed upon waking or is it time they would normally be due a feed?
☁️ has a sleep association - your baby may need help to fall asleep and this acts as a sleep crutch.
When your baby comes into light sleep they become aware that you are no longer doing those things for them so they wake up crying. For example, fed to sleep, rocked to sleep, held to sleep.
☁️ pain or discomfort - is your baby unwell or teething? If they don’t usually wake crying but suddenly start then it’s worth checking if they need pain relief and comfort
☁️ can’t fall asleep by themself - if your baby doesn’t have the skill and ability to self settle they won’t be able to take themselves back to sleep when they wake.
They may not be ready to wake either but have come into light sleep and don’t know how to get back to sleep which can lead to frustration based crying.

☁️ no reason - it’s possible your baby just needs more time to ‘come around’.
Gently rouse your baby if you’re waking them from a nap and give them time before you take them out of their sleep space.
If your baby wakes up crying, see if they will respond to reassurance via touch (patting, stroking etc) to help calm them.

Have you noticed that you can sometimes put your baby to sleep easily and at other times they really fight sleep?
There is an optimal awake window within which our babies settle more easily to sleep.
You can get more information on average awake windows by age from the baby sleep guide linked in my bio.
Knowing and understanding baby sleep cues is also important because
1. putting an overtired baby down to sleep is going to be hard work. So don’t wait till you are seeing the overtired sleep cues. Start preparing your baby for sleep earlier when they start showing the early cues. These can be more subtle.
2. When teaching self settling, if we watch sleep cues and use the optimal awake window you give your baby the best chance of learn this valuable skill. An overtired baby is likely to get frustrated and cry more.

Early rising is a solvable sleep issue!
