• New Home • At C&W we pride ourselves on using recycled materials; this video shows just how an old polytunnel frame, leftover chicken wire and unused batons from a roofing job can be put together quickly (and for little to no cost) to create a sturdy run for the poultry. This run is solid enough and will be reused for the 4+ week old poultry hatch after hatch! 🥰

Moulting time 🪶 The ducks are all in moult at the moment so we are getting fewer eggs that normal. Thankfully there’s a backlog so we are more than able to keep up with the regular orders, however for another few days we may be behind for newer customers. Poor girls look a bit shabby and my garden looks like someone has plucked them. So many feathers everywhere! To keep them entertained, I’m buying lettuces by the dozen. It’s absolute carnage at feeding time right now. These 10 cuties are growing like weeds. All 10 have pre-sold too which is great news! I just love to watch these guys as they’re very entertaining at this age, only just learning that the world is a bigger place. •Squishy egg• One of our young girls is just getting started with her laying career. Yesterday she treated us with this soft shelled egg laid on the grass. It is totally normal for a birds first few eggs to be wacky, either very small or soft shelled or even different colours. •Freedom• Everyone is loving freedom again. Thankfully the housing measures that came with the avian flu have been lifted, meaning my laying girls can be free ranged again. The hens are loose around the farm with the other animals and ducks are now loose in my garden (fertilising the grass of course). The quality of the eggs is always eggcellent (pardon the pun but I can’t help myself) but there is nothing quite like a free ranged egg. The yolks will be bright orange and they will have such a rich flavour. Message me on this page if you are interested in joining the egg order! •Grooming• Did you know that the reason water beads off of ducks feathers is because when they groom they spread oils over their entire body. They have an oil gland at the base of the tail which they will preen and then move from there to the rest of their feathers to make them water-resistant. The oil gland is called the uropygial gland! It’s a massively important part of a ducks anatomy as it helps to keep them afloat. The mallard in this video has been sitting so will wash and preen a huge amount now that she is off the clutch. You can see her washing and then preening each of her feathers. •Incubator Update• I have an incubator full of eggs at the minute; 16 of which are duck and the other 4 are goose eggs saved from the farm. All the eggs are developing well, I have removed those that weren’t moving on properly or had failed early on. The remaining eggs are halfway through the incubation process today; 28 days for duck and 30 for goose! So in 14 days time we will be expecting the hatch to begin and listening for those first little peeps. In the video you can see the movements of the developing duckling and the blood vessels along the shell. This is the reason I candle eggs every 8-10 days, to ensure that they are developing properly and aren’t in need of a higher humidity level or more rotations. These beautiful birds were my first ever ducks. I rescued a clutch of 7 eggs after it had been abandoned and incubated them at home. They taught me so much about rearing ducklings and how much work ducks truly are. Sadly we lost 7 of 8 ducks to the fox and they truly will be missed. Every single duck has a different character to the next and it was great fun to watch them all grow and flourish. The loss of those 7 led to my current pet ducks and different breeds to the mallard.
