“Spending time learning life skills in a fun way”.

This was recent feedback from a pupil after a ‘Time to Talk Money’ workshop when asked what their favourite part was. Made my day as that’s exactly what I’m hoping to achieve.

Another observation was that some people genuinely struggle with money. Exactly why I’m on a mission to help young people become more financially aware.

Time To Talk Money today at Coatbridge high School. Thanks to all the pupils who took part. It was a privilege to be back at my old school helping the pupils become more aware.

When I’m feeling stuck, I always recall a picture of a young boy coming into a workshop with head down and shoulders slumped, totally disinterested. I started to talk about what we were about to do and gave everyone a job, including him. He got up from his chair, head held high and shoulders lifted and set off to get his life organised. It was amazing to see the sense of pride and purpose and how that young boy totally changed his attitude and became engaged in the activity. He could see the relevance to his life and was taking control.

That’s my why. We need to give young people a sense of hope and help them navigate the path ahead, armed with all the life skills they need, including managing money and having the confidence to do that.

If you’d like help to inspire your pupils to raise their aspirations and build confidence with money, please read on.

Time To Talk Money workshops are available throughout the year, but I’m delighted to be able to offer a 90 minute taster session to any 2 schools which we’ve not visited before in North Lanarkshire. The workshops can be tailored to suit P5-S6 pupils and will be for up to 30 pupils.

They are available on mornings of Thursday 6 and Friday 7 October. All your pupils need is a pencil and be ready to have some fun.

Time to Talk Money workshops give young people an opportunity to experience life as an adult - managing a monthly salary and making all the financial decisions. They gain an understanding of all the bills that need to be paid and the decisions parents/carers have to make and how over-spending can impact them and their mental health. It’s an amazing opportunity many adults wish they’d had before getting their first pay.
