We would like to increase awareness about men’s mental health and shed light in the issues surrounding it.
🔸Men are disproportionately more likely to be compulsorily detained (or 'sectioned') for treatment.
🔸Men account for around three-quarters of all suicides, a staggering statistic.
🔸Men report significantly lower life satisfaction.
🔸87% of rough sleepers are men.
🔸 Men are nearly three times as likely to become dependent on alcohol and three times as likely to report frequent drug use.
🔸Men are less likely to seek support and
treatment for their mental health.
It is crucial to break the stigma surrounding men's mental health and create a supportive environment where men feel encouraged to seek help.
Mental health hospitals don't have to be like this.
We need to act. Now.

🌙💤 Importance of Sleep Hygiene for Mental Health 💤🌙
Sleep hygiene is an often overlooked aspect of self-care, but it plays a vital role in our mental well-being. Taking care of your sleep habits can have great benefits for your overall mental health. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, depression, or have experienced trauma, practising good sleep hygiene is crucial.
So, what exactly is sleep hygiene? It refers to the habits and practices that promote quality sleep and contribute to a restful night. Here are some simple tips to improve your sleep hygiene:
🌞 Embrace Morning Sunlight: Exposure to natural light in the morning helps regulate your circadian rhythm, promoting better sleep patterns. Start your day by soaking up some sunlight to feel more alert and energised.
📵 Limit Screen Time: Avoid using electronic devices, such as smartphones or tablets, close to bedtime. The blue light emitted by screens can disrupt your sleep by interfering with melatonin production.
☕ Watch Your Caffeine Intake: Be mindful of consuming caffeine, especially in the evening. Stimulants like coffee or energy drinks can interfere with falling asleep and may affect the quality of your rest.
🛏️ Create a Restful Environment: Ensure your sleep environment is comfortable and conducive to relaxation. Clean sheets, a cool temperature, and a quiet atmosphere can promote better sleep.
⏰ Stick to a Routine: Establish a consistent sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, even on weekends. This helps regulate your body's internal clock and improves sleep quality.
🎧 Find Your Own Techniques: Everyone is different, and what works for one person may not work for another. Explore various relaxation methods, such as saunas or listening to calming sounds like rainforest music or waves, to enhance your sleep experience.
Remember, sleep is not a luxury but a necessity for our well-being. Prioritising good sleep hygiene can positively impact your mental health, allowing you to wake up feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to tackle the day!

Last week we explored some strategies to cope when you’re feeling anxious. Today let's dive into some powerful strategies to help prevent anxiety.
1️⃣ Embrace Morning Sunlight: Rise and shine with a dose of natural light! Expose yourself to sunlight in the morning, as it helps regulate your internal clock and promotes the production of serotonin—a neurotransmitter associated with mood regulation. Open those curtains, step outside, or take a walk to welcome the sun's rays and energize your day.
2️⃣ Prioritize Quality Sleep: Restful sleep is a cornerstone of mental well-being. Create a soothing bedtime routine by winding down before bed, minimizing exposure to blue light from electronic devices, and ensuring your sleep environment is calm and comfortable. Adequate sleep promotes emotional resilience and equips you to face the day with clarity and positivity.
3️⃣ Nourish Your Body and Mind: Pay attention to your nutrition and provide your body with nourishing foods. Fueling your body properly supports optimal brain function and emotional stability.
4️⃣ Engage in Mindfulness: Practice mindfulness to cultivate present-moment awareness and reduce anxiety. Set aside time each day for meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simple moments of stillness. Allow yourself to fully experience the present moment, observing thoughts and sensations without judgment. Mindfulness nurtures a sense of calm and fosters resilience in the face of life's challenges.
5️⃣ Movement and Exercise: Incorporate regular physical activity into your routine. Engaging in exercise releases endorphins, the body's natural mood enhancers, and reduces stress hormones. Whether it's a brisk walk, yoga class, gym session, or any activity you enjoy, find ways to move your body and boost your overall well-being.
Remember, these preventive strategies are not only valuable for anxiety management but also for maintaining a healthy and balanced life.
We can get through it! 💪
For mental health awareness week we want to explore some effective techniques to help you find calm and balance, when you’re feeling overwhelmed with anxiety.
1️⃣ Abdominal Breathing: Practice deep breathing exercises to activate your body's relaxation response. Breathe in slowly through your nose, allowing your abdomen to expand, and then exhale gently through your mouth.
2️⃣ Mindful Walking: Step outside and take a mindful walk amidst nature. Engage your senses by noticing the sights, sounds, and scents around you. As you walk, pay attention to the sensation of your feet touching the ground and the fresh air in your lungs.
3️⃣ Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Find a comfortable spot and systematically relax each muscle group in your body. Start from your toes and work your way up, tensing and then releasing each muscle group. This technique helps release tension and promotes a sense of relaxation.
4️⃣ Grounding Techniques: Engage your senses to anchor yourself in the present. Try focusing on the texture of an object in your hands, the taste of a soothing beverage, or the sound of calming music. By redirecting your attention to the present moment, you can alleviate anxiety and regain a sense of control.
5️⃣ Journaling: Take a few moments to jot down your thoughts and feelings in a journal. Write freely without judgment, allowing yourself to express and release any anxious thoughts or emotions. Journaling can provide clarity, promote self-reflection, and reduce anxiety.
Remember, it's essential to explore various techniques that resonate with you personally. Whether it's hitting the gym, losing yourself in a good book or music, trying your hand at cooking, immersing yourself in gardening, or practicing calming yoga poses, find your own techniques that brings you joy and peace.
Embracing these anxiety management techniques will empower us with effective tools to help manage our anxiety.
The relationship between our diet and our mental health is complex. But, research shows a link between what we eat and how we feel.
Eating well can help you feel better when you’re experiencing anxiety. You don’t have to make big changes to your diet - making healthy choices is key. 🥝🥗

Well done to the young people in our care who yesterday tackled Chrome Hill in the Peak District as part of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
Ian Bradley, Teacher and Duke of Edinburgh Award Lead within our St Andrew’s College, explained: “The group managed to avoid the recent bad weather and reached the summit after a couple of hours climbing. A great achievement by all members of the group, well done all!”
At St Andrew's we work hard to ensure that the young people in our care are able to access as many opportunities as they could have outside of hospital. The Duke of Edinburgh programme offers an opportunity for participants to discover new interests, develop essential skills, set personal challenges and push their personal boundaries.
Congratulations to all!
