Sclerotherapy is a procedure used to treat blood vessel malformations and also malformations of the lymphatic system. A medicine is injected into the vessels, which makes them shrink. It is used for children and young adults with vascular or lymphatic malformations.
One of the first questions many people have when it comes to medical procedures is, “Does it hurt?” Well, we're happy to inform you that no, sclerotherapy does not generally hurt. The slight pinch of the needle is likely all you'll feel during your treatment
Sclerotherapy patients can return to their regular daily activities as soon as the procedure is complete. If pain is present, it usually fades within just a few days. Mild bruising may occur and will heal completely in one to two weeks.
Sclerotherapy can effectively treat up to 80 percent of damaged veins with each session, while fewer than 10 percent of patients report no improvement in their condition. For patients suffering from pain with spider veins, it can alleviate pain.
Sclerotherapy treatment takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
