As you may well know, Audio T is running a free turntable health check. Since the launch of this initiative, we have been thrilled to see a significant number of hi-fi enthusiasts and vinyl lovers bring their treasured turntables into our stores across England and Wales for a complimentary health-check. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many customers expressing their appreciation for the opportunity to ensure their equipment is performing at its best without any initial cost.

A Surprise

Occasionally, a real gem has come our way, and this happened when a customer brought into the Oxford store a vintage Acoustic Research XB turntable that he had recently purchased. Well, in hi-fi and audio circles the similar XA is venerated as one of the wellsprings of modern turntable design, whose design principles influenced many famous and acclaimed players that appeared later.

Designed by Edgar Villchur, this ingenious and yet simple product, was primarily produced to minimise wow, flutter and resonance. This was achieved by isolating the tone arm and the platter from the rest of the unit. Villchur mounted both on a rigid bearing plate isolated from the base, which also reduced relative motion between the tone arm and the spindle. The platter itself was stabilized on a three-point damped spring-mount system, with each of the springs placed at equal load points to minimize unevenness.
The original XA hailed from 1961 and was upgraded to the XB eventually with an added cueing device. This was the model our customer had purchased.

Our Service

A quick check over for the customer revealed that the platter bearing was dry, the deck needed some TLC and fettling, and a new stylus was required for the fitted vintage Shure M91.The belt was cleaned and was okay. Our customer agreed to labour costs and parts required. We downloaded a copy of the original manual from Vinyl Engine and sourced a new stylus from Germany, so the deck retained its authenticity.

Once some oil was added it revolved at 33.34rpm, which is good. Suspension was in good order too, and the arm bearings were spot on. We had to retain the original cartridge bolts from the detachable (Bakerlite?) headshell, as they were we believe Imperial size! The arm lift and lower mechanism required some re-profiling as it had become bent over the years.
Once the work was completed, we tested the deck on two full albums, and it sounded great. Cue, one happy customer!

Here at Audio T Oxford we have just completed an active speaker install for our delightful customers in the West Country.

The customer in question was looking for a dynamic and engaging system with real musical presence, so that they could listen to all their CD collection and expand their musical portfolio. Part of the brief was, without musical compromise, for the system to be visually attractive, flexible and minimalist. This was followed up by a demo at our store, something we always recommend.

What was the outcome? Step forward:

• The active Focus 50 wireless speakers in walnut, controlled and configured by the Dynaudio app
• The Zen server/CD ripper/streamer, supplying music via UPNP and the Innuos Sense app.
• The English Electric switch from providing a low noise digital environment.

Sounded exceptional and looked really good in the domestic environment.

This mid 80s Rega Planar 3 was brought in to take advantage of our free turntable health check throughout May, and I have to say that it is in absolutely superb condition. It could have been bought yesterday!

Sounding great with a new Audio Technica VM 95ML cartridge to replace the ancient Linn K9 and with a Rega Reference belt replacing the brittle and now pair shaped forty year old original. Re oiled the bearing and it is sounding great!

We’re having a little bit of a spring clean at Audio T Swansea with a bit of stock rotation on a Linn Selekt Klassik DSM Streamer Amplifier and a pair of Majik 140 floor standing speakers in Walnut with a combined saving of over £2,150!!

Currently playing today, quite a strange and yet pleasant system! The Planar 8 Turntable sporting the beautifully natural sound of the Songbird MC, being amplified by the stunning Aethos Amplifier and the stupendous Confidence 30 Floorstanders! Such a fantastic display of clarity and warmth from this whole system set up, it really is a pleasure on the ears.

Here at we have just finished installing this fantastic 5.1 surround sound system in our customers stunning home entertainment room. The system we installed here consists of starting with the amplifier we have the Cinema 70 slimline AV receiver. The television was supplied by our customer and mounted by us connected to the receiver via ARC using a C-View HDMI cable, he also has plugged in for film and gaming his Playstation 5 console. On the speaker side of things we have gone for these rather stunning speakers starting with the fronts we have the Diamond 12.3 floor standing speakers with Diamond 12C centre speaker and pair of Diamond 12.1 speakers on the rear, not forgetting we have the SW 10 Subwoofer. The speakers are connected to the amplifier using Rumour X. This system is not just visually stunning it really packs a punch bringing gaming and movies to life.
