Leather Cartridge Wallet / Holder
This was supposed to be for my pal Derek for his 6.5-284 deer stalking rifle but as it was a first build for me and that I encountered a few little design hiccups on the way, I decided to relieve the pressure and make it for my own .243.
Since it was to be an 11 cartridge wallet, I wanted to try and keep the profile as slim as it could be which meant that a row 5 cartridges would fit in between the row of 6... After some trial and error, I got there in the end!
Sgian Dubh sheath (commission)
An interesting wee project which was a new one for me... A commission for a black Sgian Dubh sheath with a baseplate extending along the handle to protect the calf from the brass pommel.
New watch strap...
It was about time to renew the old watch strap which was beginning to crack and show obvious signs of wear. Still, it served me well as I made it 5 years ago and wore this watch every day since!

Leather cartridge wallet
This was made for a friend a couple of weeks ago. He asked for a 10 round cartridge wallet in 6.5mm PPC caliber. This first time project didn't work too badly but if I were to make another one I would definitely offset the two rows of loops so that they fit into one another when the wallet is closed. It would keep the profile lower.

After fitting the rifle with a leather cheek pad, the original plastic CZ butt plate looked out of place and was extremely slippery when resting against a smooth surface. A rubber pad would obviously have done the trick but I thought that a leather pad would be more in keeping with the traditional style. Some 11oz leather, far too thick for most applications, would do nicely! The butt pad has been reinforced with 3 acrylic spacers glued with epoxy and the leather piece has been stamped with a basket-weave pattern and hand-stitched with white thread to match the cheek pad.

A few weeks ago, I decided to swap the synthetic stock on my CZ452 Style rifle for a more traditional wooden stock I had restored. However, the comb of the wooden stock was much lower than the original synthetic one and made shooting with a high mounted scope rather awkward. So, off to the leather corner and I came up with this design...

I've been experimenting with a wet-moulded leather cover for my car key. The strap can be removed and the key pulled out to change the battery. I've been a bit impatient and didn't let the leather dry long enough when moulding it over the key, hence the slightly rough and ready look... Also, the 2mm thick leather I used was probably a bit too thick for this rather delicate project...

Another little experiment with fish leather (coalfish this time) and goose leather... Once cured, goose skin is very suple and delicate. I used fish and goose leather on this keyring to represent how I split my year: fishing from March to August and shooting from September to February...

I've been experimenting lately with "fish leather" (brown trout, salmon and coalfish). I cured the skins through a chemical free process and used the leather in a couple of projects. Fish leather handles very differently from mammal leather but it's not dissimilar to snake skin in appearance.
For this project, a piece of cured brown trout skin was used.

This guitar strap was a first for me and I had to ask for help to get hold of a strap, especially to work out the length adjustment design (Thank you Elizabeth and John!).
I was also asked to add a small map of Stronsay on the strap and this involved marking a map (about 35mm square) and creating a pattern by stamping the leather with various tools. I had in mind to reproduce an antique look by dying the finished pattern with light brush strokes with dark and light shades in order to give it more of a 3D effect.

This is another custom Opinel, rebuilt using polished roe-deer antler and brass for the handle and modifying the blade profile. The locking ring mechanism on these knives not only allows to lock the knife in the open position but also to prevent its accidental opening when folded in your pocket. A very simple and yet brilliant idea! It could only have been French...๐

This is a commission for a modified Opinel folding knife with roe-deer handle and brass. In order to make the handle more streamlined than the original, the "yatagan" shaped blade has been filed down into a drop-point style blade; this makes the knife more compact and the point less likely to poke out of its slot when closed. These carbon blade knives take a razor sharp edge and the roe-deer antler gives them a special classic look!

These knives are built on Finnish Polar 54 stamped carbon blades. The stamp certifies the blade has been hand-sharpened.
The bolster is made of brass and the pommel of recycled nautical brass with a beautiful "vert-de-gris" pattern. The middle section is made of stacked leather between two spacers of reindeer antler.
The full grain leather sheaths have been shaped and stitched by hand so that the knives fit in perfectly and held by a safety strap fitted with a traditional head button stud.
Whether you're out gardening, working in the shed or out after small game, these short bladed knives are the perfect companion!
