π late evenings and early mornings π
- the last 2 weeks saw many late evenings and early mornings, working and planning things, marking up new music, writing applications, and masterclasses.
- while it was a means to an end, it's not sustainable, which is something the lovely
reminded me of this week too. somewhere along the line, a normal routine has to be returned to. No one is capable of healthily living on edge for a lengthy time period.
- I've reminded myself this week that people's social media can be skewed (novel idea, i know π
). People post exciting things, big things, things that look like they're very busy. Sometimes, they really are that busy, but rarely are they *always* that busy. We often see those things and think "I'm not that busy, i must be failing/not good enough/doing something wrong" and sometimes "I'm not really a musician if I'm not working all the time"
- I think we all fall prey to this at times, and my best reminder to take care of myself is to think like a cat - they don't sacrifice their sleep, their food, their sunshine naps just to "look busy". To them, that is busy enough. π
β¨30/09/23β¨ - Last Night of the Islington Proms with the Haydn Chamber Orchestra conducted by Jess Hoskins at

Also spotted some gnomes π (why is there no gnome emoji?)
had a little boogie with sophie the steggy to celebrate the end of the year π
1st year at RAM finally completed. more reflections to come, but it's been a wild ride.
I finished the year with an injury that stopped me playing and left me really demotivated and unhappy with everything i tried to do. It's a process, but this summer is all about recovering from that and strengthening mentally and physically for what lies ahead.

little snippet of Absidioles for you!
I was hesitant to share this last week. I felt frustrated with my playing and where I am at mentally and physically right now. I don't yet have the ability to focus as much as I want to or on all the things I want to. I was mad at myself that I can't do what I could do a year ago. But then I had to remind myself, this time last year I had such little understanding of myself and everything I had no purpose beyond just playing because I didn't know what else to do.
TLDR; I posted it anyway. I listened back this week and found myself wondering why I was so critical. Clearly, it was my mind trying to worry me.

Started properly looking at this bit today, deciding to tackle the difficult bits first! Here's how it went, and the process I went through to get there (albeit condensed!)

Term 1 - A Reflection π€

Boy has this been a journey, and I'm so glad I've had such a lovely department by my side. I wish I could say it's been plain sailing but actually, that would be unrealistic. I've questioned aspects of myself that I didn't even know existed, and I've learned so many wonderful things. But importantly, term is over and now I need a bloody break π
-
An incredible 2 days working with and being well and truly inspired!

Hopefully the first of many! Looking forward to putting into practice all the new ideas and exploring them further, and sharing them here π

The video says it all π₯°
But in all seriousness, this has been a huge part of my life for so long, and it is wonderful to be able to share it with people so easily here on Instagram, Facebook and Youtube. I wrote this little piece of music, let me know if you'd like to hear a longer version!?
β οΈ Work In Progress β οΈ
Started working on this beautiful piece by Turina (1882-1949) caller Zarabanda (from his Partita in C, transcribed by Stephanie Rappa-Curcio)
Early days, but I'm looking forward to developing a story to tell with this!
This exam means a huge amount to me. Not only is the viola my second study, it is also the instrument i get most hung up about and i used to get super nervous playing in front of anyone. part of this was because i never felt good enough to be able to do what i wanted with the music in the same way i can on the harp. then came the struggle of zoom lessons (i dont miss them) which made communicating the details of a piece much harder. i found this really challenging because i could see what i wanted, but couldn't reach it. finally, i feel like I've pushed past this barrier i had up about not being good enough, or not being first study so it not being as valid. I've learned that i can bring different skills to my playing depending on the instrument, and that at the end of the day, the music is the most important.
# harp
here's the video/recording of my harp trio composition.
-
I'm not going to lie here, I grew (and still am) incredibly frustrated with the ordeal i had putting this together. From start to finish this piece has presented challenges... whilst the opening of this recording is of real life harpists, (thanks to Caitlin and Isabella!) the second half of this work has been computer generated ( i have to say the trill effects on Sibelius crack me up but also annoy me no end). This is because trying to record it remotely was impossible and piecing it together made it sound worse, not better.
I was supposed to be recording this live at the junior chamber music festival last weekend, however, due to isolation rules with COVID, the two other harpists in the trio were unable to perform. I guess all I can say is the time is clearly not right for this piece at the moment, but I am holding out for the moment I can return and have this performed live... in the mean time, enjoy β€οΈ

Today marked the very end of my time at the Junior :(
As a harp department, we got together to do a concert to each other on zoom, marking the end of a complicated year and as preparation for exams/courses/next steps over the next few weeks. I was able to share a (somewhat altered) recording of my new composition, and perform some Bach on the harp and viola. (recordings to follow soon!)
Though it's only been 2 years, joining was the best decision of my life so far, and I'm so excited to return for the next for years to do my undergraduate degree!
