Update on GM proposed clean air charging zone trying to be introduced by the labour party - Local councillors must rebel against this if you truly represent the working class

The GM clean air zone is still to be reviewed after outcry from residents in GM that could have seen many SME businesses close (run by working class people).hopefully local councillors will reject a charge to GM residents and adopt the Leeds model of non charging CAZ

Hundreds of taxi drivers joined our go slow to Andy Burnham office in protest against the largest CAZ charge that could close down hundreds of small businesses. With cost of living and fuel bills rising this unnecessary charge must be stopped - we need the model Leeds adopted where traffic calming measures have seen a drop in pollution by 80%

Whilst collecting litter in Newton Heath today - visited a cancer resident having issues with neighbours constantly dumping waste in alley + not been collected by mcr council - reported to and Environmental health and no one has responded for week’s - Private landlord has handed this over to Mcr council who use this property for immigrants, in this case the smell of cannabis and constant comings and going’s at 2am every night is affecting this residents health - Why aren’t the local councillors and the council not helping this venerable lady to resolve these issues

Greater Manchester CAZ scheme

The process was initiated by the UK government after the Supreme Court ruled that it had broken the law by failing to protect people from polluted air and that urgent action needed to be taken by local councils to decide how best to clean up the hotspot areas in order to comply with the government instructions.
The air quality improvement plans that were submitted by local government in 2018 (pre pandemic), no longer represent the true pollution levels shown today. Nearby neighbouring council Leeds have amended their CAZ charging scheme by simply introducing traffic calming measures instead, the result being that the pollution levels in Leeds on key routes is below legal limits and is not likely to exceed them again, without the need for drivers or vehicle owners to be charge a daily fee.
More than 90% of buses and 80% of heavy goods vehicles driven in the city now use cleaner Euro 4 diesel engines. Nearly half of the city’s licensed taxi and private hire cars are also now hybrid or electric, or are euro 4 petrol / petrol hybrid, or euro 6 diesel engines.
Greater Manchester could have decided to adopt a non-charging clean air zone with the focus on improving air quality by retrofitting certain vehicles, (including accepting retrofit devices which are far more affordable, reliable, beneficial and achieve the same targets for only £459 per vehicle, but have Paris France lab testing results instead of CVRAS test track results,) traffic flow management or re-routing some traffic specifically around the two hotspots, Instead they have decided to charge small businesses already in financial hardship in an economy already hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
Greater Manchester will soon become a ghost town for’ small businesses, working class people and passing trade due to this back-door congestion charge that was once thrown out in 2008.
We will not be making any secrets about the fact that despite the allegations that this is all central governments fault, effectively using the scheme as a political weapon, the actual plans and decisions regarding the scheme itself, lie very firmly locally, this is local councils decisions and they must react accordingly, or at the very least take responsibility for their actions.
