Last Monday we presented our first ever talk on ear health to the residents and staff at Watermeadow Grange Care Home in Exeter.
After some fantastic feedback and recognising that there is a need for this outreach, we're thrilled to announce that this is a free service we can provide to care homes, retirement complexes and community groups, and also within the B2B community - our next presentation is already scheduled for next Tuesday 10th at Plympton Chamber of Commerce.
If you know of a group or community that might find this helpful and informative, please let us know by emailing [email protected]
Just a small note that we're on annual leave from tomorrow (Wednesday 28th August) and will be back in the office on Monday 2nd September.
We have very limited availability next week - if you are in need of an appointment, please call 01752 428100, leave a message and we'll get back to you on Monday.
Have a wonderful week, everyone!
As it's International Cat Day, we thought we'd introduce you to our office 'assistants' (distractions) - Doris is the black and white and Mochi is the tabby β€οΈ
π Don't forget your ears when applying sunscreen! π
These often-overlooked areas are vulnerable to sun damage, too. Protecting them with SPF can prevent painful burns and reduce the risk of skin cancer - wearing a wide brimmed hat helps too.
Keep your ears safe and healthy under the sun!
At Holmes Ear Care, we use ear wax microsuction to remove excess or impacted wax from the ear canal.
It has several benefits over other methods such as syringing, including being less messy and carrying fewer risks. It only takes a few minutes and is considered the gold standard in ear wax removal.
Before we use microsuction during an appointment, we'll ask you a few questions about your health and have a chat about any concerns you may have about your ears. We'll then discuss the microsuction technique and perform a quick ear health check looking at the ear lobe and surrounding area. Once we've established that your ears are nice and healthy, we'll use our microsuction system to remove any wax if necessary.
Holmes Ear Care provides ear care services for people who are unable to visit a high street clinic. We cover a wide geographical area in and around Plymouth and Cornwall, and can perform appointments at home, or at a popβup clinic, during the day, in the evening, and at weekends.

Holmes Ear Care: ear health experts serving Plymouth and surrounding areas
At Holmes Ear Care, we offer ear care services for people who find themselves unable to go to a high street clinic. We offer ear health checks and ear wax removal, using microsuction to quickly and safely remove excess or impacted ear wax.
If we can't remove all the wax in one appointment, we'll arrange a follow-up for no additional fee. If we spot anything unusual during the appointment (such as signs of an ear infection), we can, with your permission, send pictures and video to our ENT specialist team for advice and, if necessary, referral.

Surfer's ear is a condition where the ear canal bone grows abnormally and forms small growths. It usually affects people who swim or surf a lot in cold water, hence its name.
Surfer's ear can cause the ear canal to become narrower. Over time, this can cause wax and water to get trapped in the ear, which can lead to infection and hearing loss.
Surfer's ear can be treated with surgery if the bony growths are large or are causing issues. After surgery, it may take several weeks for the ear canal to heal.

Perforated eardrums: causes, symptoms, and treatments
Perforated eardrums can be caused by an ear infection, injury, loud noise, or sudden change in air pressure.
Symptoms of a perforated eardrum can include hearing loss, tinnitus (a ringing, buzzing, whooshing, or humming which can be heard in your ears or in your head), earache, feeling dizzy, and a high temperature.
Perforated eardrums usually get better by themselves within two months. Your GP may prescribe antibiotics if you have an ear infection which has caused the perforation. If symptoms caused by perforated eardrum don't improve by themselves, you should see your GP.

Cotton buds may seem like a useful way of cleaning your ears, but they can actually cause several problems. Here are five reasons why you should not use them in your ears.
1: They're too large. Cotton buds are too large to go into the ear canal, which is particularly small and sensitive.
2: They're inflexible. Cotton buds cannot bend around the outer ear, and can scratch and break the skin. The tip may also break off and get stuck in the ear canal.
3: They can push wax further in. Cotton buds can impact earwax by pushing it further into the ear canal, making it harder to remove and creating blockages, leading to earache or hearing loss.
4: They can damage your eardrum. Cotton buds can perforate the eardrum, which can cause hearing loss as well as more severe pain and long-term hearing issues.
5: There are safer ways of cleaning your ears. 2 or 3 drops of olive oil can help soften the earwax: there are also over-the-counter eardrops which can be used. Ask your local pharmacist for more information.
