OIPA | Partanna | Cat Welfare | Part 1

We joined , to visit their cat shelter . This shelter is a refuge from life on the streets, built by the Partanna volunteers as there was no safe space for rescued cats.

While we were there, it was business as usual as they did their regular and mandatory WhatsApp video calls for adoption. They work hard to get these cats adopted as soon as possible, a never-ending task of rescuing and rehoming. They are up against the clock as many cats are not neutered and keep having kittens.

It was clear that Sicily's animal welfare laws were slightly less stringent than Italy's, which require all animals to be microchipped, whereas Sicily doesn't. However, OIPA Partanna makes sure that they microchip all the animals, as well as providing vaccinations.

Stay tuned for Part Two next week! 💚

After "Jaws" was released almost 50 years ago, Scientific American wrote, "instead of being afraid of sharks—which have killed fewer humans within a year than such risks as accidents taking scenic selfies and encounters with vending machines—we should be afraid for sharks."

These creatures are integral parts of the ecosystem; as apex predators, they help to regulate the environment around them and stop prey from over-consuming. This means that they indirectly protect seagrass and coral reefs.

An estimated 100 million are killed each year. They are hunted for meat, their cartilage is sold as a supplement to cure cancer, and one of the most wasteful and brutal practices is shark finning. This contributes to overfishing and often through illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing (IUU). Their fins are taken and the shark is thrown back into the sea to suffer a slow death. Reduction in mangroves and being caught in longline fishing as "bycatch" has also contributed to their population decline. IUCN SSG Shark Specialist Group reported, "35.9% of the 536 assessed species are threatened."

Check out the charities below to learn more about how we can help protect these misunderstood Chondrichthyes 🦈 What's your favourite shark species?

The Big Butterfly Count starts today 🥳

Many butterfly species will be in flight this month, including the marbled white, gatekeeper, and small skipper. Below are a few plants you should include in your garden, whether they are good for butterflies, caterpillars or general wild garden essentials! If you participated in "No Mow May", you may already have a budding wildflower patch 🌱

🌸 Knapweed will do well in long grass and attract different butterfly species.
🌸 Devil's-bit scabious- a perennial wildflower and the main larval foodplant for the marsh fritillary butterfly, this species is threatened in the UK and across Europe.
🌸 Nasturtiums- a host plant for the white cabbage butterfly, this flower can be used as a "companion plant" and "trap crop".
🌸 The buddleia, AKA butterfly bush, is unsurprisingly great for butterflies! This flower is packed with nectar, although it is called an "invasive plant" in the UK.
🌸 Lavender- great for butterflies and bees.
🌸 Milkweeds- monarch larvae only eat milkweed leaves (other species will enjoy the flower's nectar). So it is a two-in-one and essential if you want to spot monarch butterflies in your garden.
🌸 Buckthorn- foodplant for caterpillars of the brimstone butterfly. This plant also provides berries for the birds later in the year.

Let us know below what wildlife you've got in your garden 🦋 Find out how to make your own butterfly house here: https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2019/07/diy-butterfly-house/

Happy World Environment Day 🥳

Featuring the wonderful BAM 💚

Animal Welfare Organisation UK - Kelp Social Online Community 31/05/2024

It’s World Parrot Day and time to celebrate these amazing animals. Smithsonian Magazine reported that “one of the most famous parrots, Alex the African grey parrot, was said to have the intelligence of a human 5-year-old.” 🦜

Unfortunately, illegal wildlife trafficking generates as much as $20 billion a year. Well-designed, e-commerce infrastructure has allowed sales to go undetected online.

One of the birds suffering to the point of extinction is the African Grey parrot. Their populations decline 21% every year; this is due to a combination of habitat loss and trafficking. In 2017, the Grey moved up to ‘threatened with extinction’ on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) list, meaning that trading became regulated.

However, wildlife traffickers have developed clever methods to continue trading and evade prosecution. Captive-bred and legally traded birds are fitted with a small metal ring and a unique serial number. Sadly, Stanislavas Huzhiavichus, ex-bird trafficker, told The Guardian in 2022 that smugglers have found a tool that can manufacture the same ring for larger, wild-caught birds.

The illegal trafficking of wildlife is a widespread issue. World Parrot Trust and Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime are working to decode a complex system. Organisations and governments are beginning to work collaboratively to monitor online trading.

Rhinos contribute to the ecosystem as a 'keystone species', impacting seed dispersal, soil fertilisation, creating waterholes through wallowing in mud and maintaining short grass. They also positively affect many other species, including zebras, dung beetles, mongoose, crested guineafowl and oxpeckers.

Poaching and habitat loss have massively impacted rhino populations in Asia and Africa. Javan rhinos were declared extinct in Vietnam in 2011, black rhinos are 'critically endangered', and white rhinos are 'near threatened'. Thankfully, there has been a rise in black rhino populations. Helping Rhinos reported, "Numbers of black rhino dropped by a staggering 96% between 1970 and 1995, but thanks to concerted rhino conservation efforts, their numbers are now rising."

Poaching poses the greatest threat to rhinos, as the value of rhino horn is estimated at $60,000 per kilogram. TRAFFIC wrote that they are seen as a "symbol of wealth and power" and used as a "luxury purchase by upper-middle class citizens in Viet Nam". Wildlife managers resorted to cutting off rhino horns as a preventative measure. However, researchers found that dehorning rhinos led to reduced social interaction and a 45% decrease in their range.

Charities like the International Rhino Foundation use many techniques to conserve these critically endangered species. IRF monitors and protects while providing wildlife crime training and habitat management. They also partner with local communities to remove invasive species and promote conservation.

Follow the charities below to find out more about how you can help 💚🙏

Residents of East Cambridgeshire voted hedgehogs as the animal they wanted the "council to focus on as part of its Bring Back Nature campaign", Spotted In Ely reported. Due to this vote to increase populations, the council created the Hedgehog Recovery Design Guidance supplementary planning document.

It includes asking developers to provide native hedgerows, install hedgehog boxes and use 'hedgehog highways' to prevent habitat fragmentation and allow them to move through small gaps in fences.

Plans like these are essential to protect hedgehog habitats. BBC stated, "A study showed hedgehog numbers had fallen by as much as 60% in the East of England over the last 30 years".

Please be careful when using lawnmowers and strimmers and make sure to cover ponds and pools, as these can be dangerous for hedgehogs 🦔

We need a Koala Protection Act! Our cute Aussie icons are in big trouble! Watch to learn why, and how to help.

Kelp Social | Join The Conversation | Home 03/05/2024

Koala' means 'no drink', from the Dharug word 'gula'. This is because eucalyptus leaves provide the majority of their hydration. They eat up to 500 grams of eucalyptus leaves a day and sleep for 18-22 hours due to the energy it takes to digest them. Koalas play an essential role in the ecosystem, including lining bird nests! Echidna Walkabout wrote, "Some koalas don’t seem to mind the free grooming session, and will sit quietly as the honeyeaters purposefully take their fill."

Australian Koala Foundation states that 80% of koala habitat has disappeared. Click here https://www.savethekoala.com/our-work/koala-protection-act/ to learn more about the Koala Protection Act and why it is important to preserve this endangered species 🐨

Also, protect the welfare of those living in sanctuaries by supporting encounters and boardwalk sightings.

12,000 years ago orangutans, aka ‘Person of the Forest’, resided in China, Indochina, Java, and Southern Sumatra, they are now extinct in all these areas.

Deforestation has massively affected their populations with 150,000 lost in 16 years. 50% of packaged products contain palm oil, which eats into biodiverse habitats and emits greenhouse gases. ‘It is estimated that up to 300 football fields forest globally are cleared every hour to make room for palm plantations’ Earth.Org 💚

The Fox Project | Fox Welfare | Documentary 24/04/2024

Trevor Williams founded The Fox Project in 1991 to offer a Wildlife Information Bureau and safe, non-lethal fox deterrents. He sought to provide a humane alternative to the common practice of killing foxes and his approach quickly gained popularity. In 1993, the organisation received its first report about an injured cub. Six years later, they were treating 750. The Fox Project incorporated the Wildlife Ambulance Service and with the help of a team of dedicated volunteers, rescuers, rehabilitators, fosterers, and fundraisers, it treats over 1,000 foxes annually. The Fox Project relies on donations to continue its remarkable work.
