BBC Look East films our rural engagement officers to find out about heritage crime in Essex

Our rural engagement officers were filmed by BBC News: East of England earlier this month, talking about #HeritageCrime.

Reporter Alex Dunlop watched PC Callum Barber use a police drone to monitor the site of an ancient Roman temple near #Colchester.

Callum told him: “I'm looking for any suspicious activity on the site. A good bird's eye view is really important to get a good view of it.”

Our Rural, Wildlife and Heritage Crime officer, PC Jed Raven, told Alex that heritage crime ‘breaks my heart’.

“It's disappointing to see,” he says. “People may take history that we're never going to know was there in the first place. And that might be a key piece of evidence we need to identify how we lived back in the day.”

Heritage crime also encompasses the desecration of ancient monuments, such as vandalism or anti-social behaviour.

A new report by Historic England and the National Police Chiefs' Council has mapped heritage and cultural property crime between February 2020 and February 2023.

Such crimes will now be added to a new heritage crime database.

All our #RuralEngagement officers and several other officers across the force are qualified to investigate rural heritage crime. They work with farmers, partners and the wider community to understand what everyone can do to protect the historic environment.

Jed says: “We’re reaching out to the public and our partners to help spot this type of behaviour, too.

“The police can’t do this alone. We need the help of our communities and I know there’s a real energy of people out there, such as the Essex Horse Rider Volunteers, wanting to help out – not to tackle offenders but simply to report what they see that isn’t quite right.”

Radio schemes keep businesses and police in touch to help keep you safe
TownLink radio schemes help retailers to prevent shop thefts and anti-social behaviour and we are introducing them to towns and cities across #Essex. Our Business Crime Team works with local partners and ShopSafe to introduce the schemes, which can help retailers to prevent shop thefts and anti-social behaviour. “The TownLink radio system provides vital reassurance to retailers in towns which have it. They can alert each other to incidents and call the police if they require assistance,” says Sergeant Christian Denning. Schemes are already running in #Basildon, #Billericay, #CanveyIsland, #Grays, #Halstead, #Lakeside, #LeighOnSea, #Pitsea, #Southend and #Wickford, with more than 480 users. More are planned and Christian says: “We are always happy to hear from councils and business leaders who would support a system being set up in their town.” ShopSafe provides and maintains the TownLink service. Operations manager Will Garrod delivers radio sets to retailers, accompanied by our business crime officers. He says: “The TownLink systems introduced all over Essex have been a real success and it's great to work alongside Essex Police, who are taking such a proactive approach in addressing business crime.” Find out more: https://www.essex.police.uk/news/essex/news/news/2023/october/townlink #ProtectingAndServingEssex #SaBAWeek #BusinessCrime #CrimePrevention

Six drugs gang members jailed following arrests in Southend, Benfleet and Rochford
Six members of the Jay and Mus drugs lines which operated in the #Southend area have been jailed. The lines worked in tandem, using each other as back-up if they were too busy or ran out of drugs to supply, Basildon Crown Court was told. But activities were brought to an abrupt halt on 16 March 2022 when city officers executed a series of drugs warrants in Southend, #Benfleet and #Rochford, making nine arrests. Watch the video to see what happened. Eight people were subsequently charged, while one was released without charge. Two men were sentenced in December 2022 but the remaining gang members - five men and one woman - were sentenced on 22 September 2023. Read more: http://esxpol.uk/0vVpq Sergeant Adam Jarvis says: “Thanks to the weight of evidence we gathered, they had no choice but to admit to their criminal activities when they appeared at court and were sentenced accordingly.” #ProtectingAndServingEssex

Stay safe on the water
Watch this body-worn video footage of a man who was fined £200 after twice literally coming into contact with one of our police vessels when officers spoke to him after spotting him driving at three times the speed limit on the water. Our Marine Unit wants to ensure everyone using our waterways and the sea around our coast does so safely. One of the problems which concerns regular water-users is people speeding or using vessels with which they are not familiar, such as personal watercraft (PWC) and speedboats. Sgt Alex Southgate says: “We want to keep people safe and highlight to occasional users the twin dangers of inexperience and of using personal watercraft and boats in an anti-social manner, which can both lead to accidents.” We also want people to be aware of the risks of not knowing about tides and local currents. Romance Fraud
Between November 2020 and October 2021, we received more than 220 reports of romance fraud in #Essex with losses reported to be around £2.1 million. Romance scams involve people being duped into sending money to criminals who go to great lengths to gain their trust and convince them that they are in a genuine relationship. They use language to manipulate, persuade and exploit so that requests for money do not raise alarm bells. These requests might be highly emotive, such as criminals claiming they need money for emergency medical care, or to pay for transport costs to visit the victim if they are overseas. Scammers will often build a relationship with their victims over time. Remembrance 2021
Remembrance does not glorify war and its symbol, the red poppy, is a sign of both remembrance and hope for a peaceful future. We have laid wreaths within the District to honour and pay tribute to all the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice during past conflicts, and to those of today’s, who have served and sacrificed to defend our nation. We remember the collaboration of the commonwealth and allied nations, who stood shoulder to shoulder then, to secure the freedom we have today. In every act of remembrance, we honour the memory of the fallen and pledge to care for the living. We will remember them. #LestweForget

Keep your children safe online
You don’t need to talk to your pre-schooler about online safety yet, right? Wrong. If you treat online safety just as you would treat road safety, then talking about safe internet use becomes the norm and not something that children feel needs to be hidden as they get older. 55 arrested and £180k seized as drug officers ramp up County Lines work
Specialist officers made 55 arrests, seized £180,000 and took more than 6kg of drugs off the Essex streets as part of a nationwide week of action focussed on disrupting County Lines drug supply. County Lines Intensification Week took place across the country between October 11 and October 17. Of the 55 arrests, officers from our Op Raptor teams secured 39 charges, with 13 people released under investigation and three people released without charge. As a result of our work, 13 County Lines have been disrupted. Our arrests were made across the county and into #London and other parts of the East, including in #Southend, #Westcliff, #Leigh, #Basildon, #Grays, #Harlow, #Chelmsford, #Colchester, #Clacton, #Dagenham, #Barking, #Chingford, #Aveley, #Enfield and #Bedford. Acting Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford, of the Essex Police Serious Violence Unit, said: “Although our work did intensify during County Lines Intensification Week, the role our Operation Raptor teams perform is very a much a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week one. “The work they put into finding County Lines, investigating them, establishing who is behind them and then building cases against those people should not be underestimated. “But our teams are specialists in their fields. They are experts in case building, which means our suspects will not know that an overwhelming case is quietly being built against them so they can be put before the courts.”

We know that many of our community members are loving dog owners, so we wanted to share this video with you, which was produced at the ‘All About Dog Show’, held in Chelmsford on 30th & 31st May. Our Dog Section were on hand to proudly show how they help to Protect & Serve Essex, stating “After an empty 2020, it’s lovely to be back out at the event on a beautiful sunny day, all proud of our dogs, and thank you, to you, the amazing public who overwhelm us with your support”. #ProtectingAndServingEssex

Despite the front Office being closed, Rayleigh Policing Station is a fully Operational Police Station. Over the evening of Saturday 28th November 2020, T/Police Sergeant Walker and his Team (B Shift) of our Local Policing Team gave us an insight into what they have been addressing during the night shift. The shift is just 1 of 5 shifts working out of Rayleigh police station and the five teams work various duties, which ensures the Rochford district does have a policing presence 24 hours a day. The duty started with a shift briefing and an overview of current information and intelligence, which is why it is key for us to keep talking, as information does get fed in by the Community Safety & Engagement Officer (CSEO). Please see the images to view some of the other things they covered throughout the night...
