Dundee employer embraces city gift card to reward staff and boost local economy 30/08/2024

What better time to show your support for Scottish businesses than Scotland Loves Local Week. And what better way to show your support for Scottish businesses than using the Scotland Loves Local Gift Card for staff , just like Malmaison Dundee.

Dale Simpson, general manager at Malmaison, Dundee said: “We chose to use the Dundee gift card in our team rewards and in our Eat, Sleep, Love Local package because we’re keen to support our city and its businesses. These are the businesses that in turn support us.

“Almost 250 businesses are part of the Dundee gift card, including big brands and independent businesses, and all of these businesses are local businesses contributing to a strong local economy. We liked the diversity of the card and the range of sectors it could be spent at, from retail to hospitality, leisure and health and beauty.

“A high proportion of our staff live in Dundee, as do their families. They’re proud to be from Dundee and it makes complete sense for us to gift our staff a gift card where the benefit stays here in Dundee. With a gift card in their hand, our team might be encouraged to try a Dundee business they’d never have tried otherwise.”

Borders teacher nominated for top award 10/07/2024

It may be the summer holidays in Scotland, but the nominations for our Teacher of the Year competition are still flowing in, like this one for Borders teacher Toni-Michelle Lee from Melrose Primary School.

"“I have four children, three in education and we’ve relocated a number of times. The children have had lots of good teachers but nobody so dedicated and devoted to the children as Miss Lee. I think everyone has one teacher that they remember through their lives, and for us, that is Miss Lee. She is amazing with the children and this shines through in the respect they have for her," said Iwona Janczuk, whose daughter Soraya attends the school.

Young Glaswegian teacher in East End nominated for 'Teacher of the Year' 04/06/2024

A Glasgow Primary One teacher has been praised for her dedication, innovation and positive impact on learners in our Teacher of the Year competition.

Natasia Nawaz is one of the teachers from Sandaig Primary School nominated in the national competition. Achievements for Natasia include participation in a Glasgow City Council phonics initiative to ensure children can read, spell and write from the beginning of primary school, with her teaching methods filmed and shared city-wide.

Susan Clark is the headteacher at Sandaig Primary School in Glasgow’s Barlanark area, and said Natasia is an excellent candidate for Teacher of the Year:

“Natasia’s teaching skills are exemplary, so much so that when we participated in the phonics project, Natasia undertook research into what was needed and created a benchmark for teaching of phonics in our area. Natasia also contributes to the broader educational community by sharing best practices and mentoring colleagues.

“Since the pandemic, attendance has sat at around 80%. Natasia is outside the gates every day chatting to parents so she can alleviate any fears and anxieties parents may have about sending their children to school.

“Many children start school without attending nursery, so they start with us ready to be filled with knowledge. Natasia ensures the children undertake activities of interest to them and have time for free play. Attendance has increased to over 90% and the children have blossomed."

Virtual headteacher for care experienced children nominated in national Teacher of the Year competition - Aberdeen Business News 04/06/2024

A virtual headteacher for care experienced children and young people in Aberdeenshire has been nominated in a national Teacher of the Year competition, led by Miconex and sponsored by group collecting platform GiftRound.

As virtual headteacher for care experienced children and young people in Aberdeenshire through The Promise initiative in Scotland, Holly Robertson has implemented Promise Groups in 28 primary and secondary schools across the county, supporting around 250 children. These groups allow children and young people with care experience to access fun activities and build a community together.

Holly, who started off her teaching career as a history teacher before becoming a guidance teacher and setting up the very first Promise Group in Huntly, said:

“When I set up the very first Promise Group, we spent a whole term getting to know each other. It was a mish mash of young people who wouldn’t ordinarily be together and we set about finding experiences for the group which would bring them together and really build on their confidence and sense of achievement. The Promise Groups are never about therapy or talking about the past, but about providing high interest experiences, from film making to drama, photography and art.

“As part of a drama project in one Promise Group, we took the children to the theatre to see the Life of Pi and the kids said ‘next time Holly, we’d like to go skiing’, so we linked with Live Life Aberdeenshire and took the children skiing and cycling. It’s important that the children’s voices are at the centre of everything we do.

“The impact of the Promise Groups on the children is positive. We hold big exhibitions to showcase the children’s work and they are brimming with pride. I’m in a wonderful position in that I get to see the transformation in the children, from being nervous, filled with self-doubt and dysregulated to being confident in what they can do and so proud of what they have achieved.

“I admit that I got a bit weepy when I heard I’d been nominated as Teacher of the Year. It is so rewarding to be somebody who can provide amazing experiences for young people.”
