Data from the Ministry of Justice revealed that in 2020, the reoffending rate for adult offenders who had served a sentence of less than 12 months was higher, at 44.8%.
Although the stats in the image above show a decrease in reoffences for adults that served a sentence longer than a year, it is clear that recidivism is still a problem.

It’s becoming ever-clearer that in order to reduce the rate of reoffences, support for prisoners needs to be increased and augmented.

The possible causes of recidivism are multiple and complex.
Some of these include:
- A lack of rehabilitation and an unchanging lifestyle after release.
- Mental health problems.
- Little access to resources to effectively reintegrate into society.
- The absence of economic and employment opportunities.

These numbers reveal a lot about the current prison system:
Besides the social case, the economic case is strong for ending the cycle of incarceration for reoffending ex-prisoners. With Enterprise Reality, we’re aiming to change this picture by creating avenues to empower these toward self-employment.
