Tale of the Royal Purple - The early 15th Century BC saw the citizens of Tyre and Sidon, two cities on the coast of Ancient Phoenicia (present day Lebanon), producing purple dye from sea snails called the Spiny Dye-Murex. The Iliad of Homer and the Aeneid of Virgil have also mentioned the clothing colored with the Tyrian dye. The deep, rich purple dye made from this snail became known as Tyrian purple.
