This Property in Wye has been put back to how it once was.
Built with lime it was smothered in a cement render which was trapping in moisture.
The original plan was to remove the cement render. Then render in lime mortar, leaving a gap of 5/6 courses of brickwork exposed at the bottom. Also to dig down and adjust the levels of the front, creating drainage in the process.
We assumed the condition underneath wouldn’t allow us to leave it as exposed masonry.

This beautiful double fronted property in Ashford has had all of the original masonry repointed.
Originally built with lime mortar it was essential to repoint in the same building material.
Lime allows the property to breathe preventing damp. Even more important with solid wall construction like this one where penetrating damp can otherwise be a problem.
The mortar should always be softer than the bricks. These handmade soft reds are particularly soft and lime makes for a softer more flexible mortar.
Also the conservation of the natural character of the building is maintained - we have put back what was there using traditional methods.

When it comes old brick and stonework there’s is only one safe method to remove old grime and deposits - Steam cleaning
A jet wash can damage the bricks and remove the fire-skin leaving the bricks susceptible to frost damage. The same goes for tiles you often see this when companies jet wash roofs removing the waterproof layer of the tile - know as delamination.
Sand blasting can be even more abrasive when it comes to masonry cleaning and should be avoided.
Steam cleaning uses super heated water at 150 degrees but with a low pressure.
A safe and conservation approved method.

This property in Herne Bay has been brought back to its former glory.
It was built using a lime mortar and it’s very important for the building that when repointing a suitable lime mortar is put back in.
Here are some of the reasons.
Older hand made bricks are softer and the mortar should always be softer than the bricks to allow for movement. Lime mortars are more flexible when compared to modern cement.
Lime mortar is breathable so it is crucial that when repointing cement is not used as this will trap in moisture. Trapped moisture can lead to damp problems and increased spalling in brickwork.
Aesthetically and from a conservation standpoint masonry keeps its historical character and looks great.
This customer was very happy with the results.
