Last weekend I had the pleasure of training with Peter Consterdine, and Christian Wedewardt at the Karatepraxis Castle Retreat. It was an incredible experience and I learned a lot of useful tips and tricks of practical karate which I am excited to put into my self-defence teaching. I Cannot wait to further expand my knowledge on this course again next year!

Last weekend I had the utter privilege of doing a Level 1 course in Bristol which I cannot rate highly enough! Incredible instructors, fellow students and information. I could not be prouder to be able to call myself a (currently provisional) endorsed colleague! This is an exceptional movement that I am excited to be a part of - I’m already looking forward to hopefully doing level 2 in September and seeing how my teaching evolves as a direct result of this course

Had an amazing time at fight camp at the beginning of the month! Thanks so much Jordan Thomas for organising the event, as always was a pleasure to train with you, and great to train with Jamaal Otto for the first time since 2019. Had a lot of fun expanding my training and learning some new drills!

Over the last few weeks I have had the amazing opportunity to train with karate World Champion Jordan Thomas and 9x karate World Champion Wayne Otto! These are two incredible competition karateka, and while much of what I learned was competition-based, there were transferable skills I can’t wait to put into practice in self-defence scenarios - including explosively and tactics for when you’re stuck in a corner. Thank you to Sensei Otto (.wayne) and Sensei Thomas (Jordan Thomas for their tuition, and University of Exeter Karate Club and for organising the events!

I had an amazing time training last weekend at Iain Abernethy’s residential! 23 hours of training over the long weekend (plus 2 hours the night before at Iain’s club). It was such an amazing experience and I learned so much, as well as meeting some great people. Cannot wait to pass on what I’ve learned, both through teaching self-defence sessions and to other karateka at Ren Ryū Karate Club . Thanks so much for organising such an incredible weekend Iain Abernethy- I’m already excited and saving for next year!

Since studying self-defence in more detail, the importance of soft skills, such as prevention and avoidance has been clear. While it is still important to understand and practice defending yourself physically and know defences that you can adapt to a variety of situations, the lesser-talked-about soft skills need more recognition. It’s time to change the way we think about self-defence and have these as a key focus, because the skill of avoiding a fight when you can is the best way to protect yourself, as Herodotus said, “force has no place where there is need of skill”

In the month since my last post, I have been working hard behind the scenes. As part of this, I have been using what I have recently learnt in various courses to improve the syllabus’ and structures of the sessions I teach! Head over to my website for more details on the courses I offer, and remember to get in touch if you have any questions or would like to enquire about booking a session!

I had an amazing long weekend up in Oxfordshire for Joe Saunder’s Managing Violence and instructor courses and am pleased to say I am now one of the first group of Managing Violence provisional instructors! It was an incredible experience in which I learned a lot which I will be putting into my seminars and met some great like-minded people. Now onto the next 6 months of training/assessment to become a fully-fledged Managing Violence instructor. Thank you so much to Joe Saunders (Managing Violence Podcast with Joe Saunders) for all you taught us, Mary Stevens for organising the weekend, and all other attendees for making it such a fun experience

A year ago today I taught my first ever self-defence session. It was for the Exeter University campaign and had to be done entirely online because of Covid!
I view that day as the start of this journey. A year on I have completed the Self Defence Award from the World Combat Association’s Combat Coach programme (and started on another qualification from the programme), become an associate instructor for the British Combat Association, and become an instructor at Ren-Ryu karate club. On top of this I have graduated university, launched this business and taught several other self-defence sessions, fortunately in person!
I am doing a course on managing violence next weekend to gain further skills and hopefully a qualification in that area and am looking forward to teaching more very soon! I cannot wait to see what this year holds, and to see how I can keep growing and improving in my skills and business!

Happy International Women’s Day! I am lucky enough to have many incredible women in my life, and in doing karate for twelve and a half years (which is incidentally where I’ve met many of these), I have truly learned that this girl really can - and will. Eleanor Roosevelt once said ‘A woman is like a tea bag - you can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water’, and my god is she right. We are stronger than people think, and if we are given a more even playing field and are allowed to build our confidence, we will be unstoppable

My second blog post is now live on the website! This piece covers self-defence law in England and Wales. It’s a really important topic in teaching and reassuring you of your rights if you ever need to defend yourself, as well as being interesting in its own right. So go and check it out on the website and learn something new!

I had an amazing time teaching in Exeter last week for the campaign! Over the course of the week there were 85 student signups for the sessions, with the focus of the scenario training being defences against hook punches and grabs. While these sessions covered some serious issues it was great to see people enjoying themselves and laughing while learning some important skills!

The physical side isn’t the only element of self-defence and should only ever be used as a last resort. However, practical training helps build muscle memory and makes you more confident, which is why frequent practice is so important.

I had a lot of fun at today’s training with Ren Ryū Karate Club learning some new combinations based on katas (Bassai Dai and Kushanku). Some more practice is needed but I will definitely be adding this to my repertoire! 👊
